You guys have had great fortune to have so many class acts like Yzerman, Howe and Lidstrom.

I'll just hyperventilate into a paper bag for awhile if noone minds.

...Also, I have to work, so I won't get to see it. I'll probably PVR NHl channel which might or might not cover it.

I guess Zetts will be the new captain, because Dats seems to not want it.

...someone fire up the "We love you Captain Nick" avatars. Dammit I was still in high school when he started with the Wings.

Wow, what a ride. Tomorrow will be one of the saddest days for me as a Wings fan. Nick is the epitome of Wings hockey for the last 2 decades. What a guy.

Refs need to understand the captain of the team. Datsyuk is better than Z, but his communication skills just arent there.

Why should you be mad, this was always going to happen, if not this year then next year. We'll have to acquire a D-man somehow, some way. We'll definitely have the cap space.

Will be interesting to see how we respond to losing so much stability in our back end.

Nicklas Lidström is one of the very best of all time. I'll always be grateful for his 20 years as a player in Detroit, and the hundreds of games I've had the pleasure of watching him play. One of the many reasons he is so good is his understanding of the game, and it is my guess that he understands that the team is primed for a change in direction. The most effective leaders know when they need to lead, and when they need to step back.

One can reasonably expect Tomas Holmström to follow his close friend into retirement, and one can hope for Holland to allow Jiří Hudler to walk away as a UFA (unless the latter provides a home-town discount). Gone will be the "nobody makes more money than Nick" philosophy to which Holland has adhered, and the additional salary (cap) room gives the Wings unprecedented spending capabilities in this new era of the salary capped NHL.

Nicklas Lidström is likely going to announce his retirement tomorrow, and his final decision as captain will blast wide open the doors of opportunity for the Wings.

They easily could be. Ovechkin learned English in a few years. Dats just hasn't as well in much longer. Plus, he said he didn't want to captain. Damn shame, he'd make a good one.

I'm just devastated. While I kind of expected this, I knew I wouldn't be ready for his retirement. It's too early for me to think about next season and all the possible offseason acquisitions. Tears will be shed..

That said, thank you Nick for your amazing career and for everything you've done for the whole Red Wing community. You will be missed big time.

This is more devastating than Yzerman. We knew how crippled up he was. Lidstrom looks reasonably healthy(with the exception of that horrible bruise that gimped him up good, but he would have bounced back eventually)

Crushed. I wanted to see him play at the Big House very badly. It just won't be the same without Captain Nick.

heres an article that basically lists some of lidstrom's accmplishments. I found this part interesting

Quote:
What is it about a Stanley Cup finals in New Jersey that brings a star player to retire? Patrick Roy officially announced his retirement on May 28, 2003, which was in between Games 1 & 2 of the Stanley Cup finals that year between the Devils and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (what the team was called then). The first 2 games were in New Jersey and, of course, that was the last year the Devils were in the Cup finals.

One of the all-time greats. He'll be missed league-wide.

The media speculation since the announcement of a press conference has me sick. Lidstrom deserves and has earned his right to announce whether he's retiring or coming back 1 more season himself. Not this media circus of who was the first to report a "source". Such disrespect from the media. Until the words "I'm retiring" comes out of Lidstrom's mouth, I will not listen to a damn word out of a speculating media mouths.

i cant say i didn't see this coming but man i wish he could have stuck around 1 more year.

To put things into perspective, the last time Nick wasn't on the Wings roster i was a freshman in HS, this summer i'll turn 37. All of my adult life i've been watch Nick play hockey

Sadly, this is how the world works. I'm not surprised at all.
