I agree, Bourque's a cut above. A better debate would be Lidstrom vs Potvin for #5.

Lidstrom is a positional genius, Bourque played a consistently willing physical game and could be downright stick nasty, top it all off with the offense and I'd take Bourque over Lidstrom, not by much but...

Hell of a player. Weird how all the guys I watched growing up are slowly leaving the game.

Lidstrom was an incredible player to watch and the NHL will miss him. It's tough to see all of these players I've admired growing up retiring. There's a gap of greatness that will exist upon this announcement.

This thread made me want to watch some Bourque highlights on Youtube, how the Bruins didn't win a Cup with him on the team is a tragedy.

Oh and Bourque > Lidstrom

Lidstrom to Retire Tomorrow

Forgive me if this is being/has been discussed somewhere already, but alas I cannot find it.

I was browsing ESPN, and found it on TSN as well, but Lidstrom has apparently decided to retire. The Red Wings have called an 11AM presser conference tomorrow.

ESPN link: http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/79...etire-thursday

TSN mentions it in the top right corner as well, no link though.

What a great player and what a great career. That type of player is hard to find in any sport . Best of luck to him and his family.

People always like to make outlandish claims like that to get attention. Lidstrom only had one 80pt year. He couldn't even tie Orr's skates. Or Bourque's for that matter.

IMO, Lidstrom goes down as one of the Top 5 all-time defensemen. The guy could do it all, if Dougie Hamilton turns into 1/10th the player Lidstrom is I'll be thrilled.

As Lidstrom retires 6th (1142 points) on all-time points for defensemen I'm just reminded how Ray's total (1579) has got to rank high among hockey's list of records that stand the best chance of never being broken.

Think about it...

Gonchar has the most points of any active defenseman (748) - that's less than half of Ray's total, and Gonchar is 37 years old. If this record is ever broken it won't be in our lifetimes.

Great player and great career. Never should have won that last Norris, but can't hold that against him. That's on the media or whoever votes.

Going to be awfully strange to watch a Wings game next year without #5 manning the blueline, will we start to see a decline of the Wings???

Not once they land both Suter and Parise in FA. They have about 21 million in cap space next year with 11 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 2 goalies under contract. Detroit is what, a 1 hour flight to Minnesota? That team is going to be terrifying.
