Either it's a family matter or something in hockey is frustrating him to the point of wanting to get away from the sport for awhile. Something going on within the Bruins organization? Did the 1st round loss to the Caps really hit him hard? Something to that effect.
Thank $%&. The bruins are the only other team in the NE I can stomach but if we don't have to play Tim Thomas who has dominated us for what has felt like the last decade 6 times next year Hallllllllllllellujja!!
Maybe since he had a bad year he thinks people will talk about him less and then if he decides to make a comeback people will be gushing over him again. Seems like the personality to do so..
Dumb question, but if he is traded, does his 35+ contract status go with him? In other words, is his new team on the hook for a $5mm cap hit to the team that acquires him if he retires? If yes, then it could be an incentive for a cash-strapped, cap floor team.
TT is more or less giving himself leverage vs being traded. His 35+ status/contract gives him a NTC more or less. Now its on the Bruins to either fix this, not trade him, or take the reduced assets from any team trying to trade for him (and that team hopes he would be happy to play for them).
Exactly. It doesn't make sense. Perhaps Thomas is trying to force a trade? Get Burke on the phone!
It might be the reverse. He knows the Bruins might trade him when his NTC expires July 1. If he says he might not play nobody will want to trade for him.
You don't not play a season at Thomas's age and expect to come back. If Thomas takes the year off, he is as good as done in my opinion. Either he won't want to come back, or he will try but he is out of shape/reflexes not as sharp and won't be as good and teams won't want him.
A source close to Thomas later confirmed his thinking to ESPNBoston.com and also said that Thomas had brought this idea up on more than one occasion over the course of the 2011-12 season. The source also confirmed that Thomas moved his family to Colorado last fall because he wants to live there when he retires, and the motive behind taking a season off would be to train there for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

To me taking the year off to train for the 2014 Olympics is the dumbest idea ever. You can be in great shape and game form playing in the NHL. And with competition including Howard, Quick and Miller along with Schneider and Anderson as possibilities as well. I bet the GM of the USA team takes 3 goalies in the NHL, not some 40 year old who took the year off. If that is indeed Thomas's plan, he really is some weird guy haha.
I think this is nothing more than Thomas forcing the Bruins' hand. There are rumours of them wanting to shop him and with Thomas' NTC expiring July 1st they would be free to move him anywhere. With Thomas having a 35+ contract and now coming out and saying he may not play next year, what team is going to risk trading for him?

But what if NHLers aren't going to Sochi? By "taking a year off", he's technically not an NHL player, right?
Why would there be a lockout? The players seem happy, the vast majority of the NHL teams are successful. There are some minor issues to be tweaked, but as a whole the current CBA has been solid for both sides.

Therefore, he becomes USA's goalie.
In a competition with no NHL players? Not for anything, I get circumventing the situation to play for the USA but if he wants to play vs weak competition, that's sad.
That being said, we're in 2012, next season is 2012-2013. In order to be 'not an NHL player' he'd be better off doing his contract's last year and being UFA rather than have to miss back to back seasons. So your theory on not being an NHL player doesn't hold much ground.
All things considered, I think he's doing what he always does. The guy isn't afraid of going against the grain and if he seriously intends to retire or miss the season then I LOL at how much loyalty he has for his team off the ice. He's a star and a great team player off the ice but seems like off the ice he does what he feels is right and no one will stop him.
