Holzer is a very good defenseman and has been dominating the AHL with his shutdown play all season. I think he's better than Schenn currently, but he's also almost two years older than Schenn and has had the benefit of developing at a slower pace. Schenn has been rushed, but still has quite a bit of potential to be a good shutdown guy. He may mature late or not at all, but I still have faith in Schenn.
This thread should really be titled Holzer over Komisarek. If he takes Holzer's spot on the Leafs next season I'll be furious.

Don't forget you're comparing Holzer's play verses AHLers and Schenn's play verses NHLers here in terms of "shutdown" ability.

This is pretty much my logic on this one. I think Schenn would have done very well in the AHL as well, but Holzer's mobility and maturity at this point is ahead of Schenn's. Holzer may not hit as hard, but he's big, strong, physical and thinks the game very well. Let's not forget that when he was playing in the 2010 Olympics and in multiple WC's he's looked very good against top NHL and KHL players.
And Holzer is the top shutdown defenceman on the best defensive team in the AHL.
Hozler having re-signed Eakins as coach, is also a lot different than Schenn playing under fired Wilson as far as "team defense" and "shutdown" comparisons are being discussed at different levels of play.
if he's the next sidenberg, i'd personally drive schenn and komi to the airport to be shipped out.
It's hard to say what his top potential is, but I think that he'll be a second pairing guy for the Leafs eventually. He has the tools and size, just need to see what he can do on a consistent basis at the NHL level.
Hes a solid AHLer . However, he hasnt proved anything at the NHL level and has only played in 2 games and none all this season.. Holzer may be a decent prospect who had a good year with the Marlies but is NOT even close to Schenn.

so he can't skate, and has no hockey IQ?
there's no hope for holzer if he's not even close to schenn's level.
One does have to think that the speed of the game at the NHL level is faster than the AHL level. Holzer looking great down in the minors does not necessarily equate to the same level of NHL success. I would not give up on Schenn just because we assume Holzer can replace him.
Holzer could also prove to be one of those prospects that were groomed right and end up blossoming without the hiccups and problems of a prospect rushed to the big leagues.
