Dennis Potvin....Almost became a Ranger??

We know Fischler can be a senile old man, but this is absolutely shocking news. This is almost unbearable to stomach.

Look at his tweets.

https://twitter.com/StanFischler

SNYR Blog also mentions it:

http://snyrangersblog.com/rangers/bu...in-in-1993-94/

Quote:
Mike Keenan was unhappy with his team prior to the 1994 trade deadline and made a comment saying that he wished he had Denis Potvin on his team. Potvin retired after the 1987-88 season and was a broadcaster with the Panthers at the time.

Vescey writes “Potvin was flattered. Potvin was also smart. He said thanks but no thanks. The damage, however, was done. The players and the fans could see that Mike Keenan was so uncomfortable with his team that he would banter the name of the suave, slap shot-firing, ankle-snapping, hope-breaking symbol of that half-a-century-plus of frustration.”

You don't remember this? It was a big headline when it broke. I was a freshman in college at the time and almost died when I saw the front page of the post.

This was big news at the time. I remember working in the city and it was all over front page news.

didn't think it was serious at the time, but turns oput he was asked by Keenan. However, he was not asked by Neil Smith who I have no doubt wold not have made that move.

It's ridiculous that he was even asked. Retired for years, hated by Rangers fans, and our '94 defense wasn't exactly lacking.

I believe that at some point during that season, the Rangers had lost like 6 in a row. It was a PR ploy to sebd the team a message

Just another example of a newcomer coming to the organization and saying/doing something stupid.

Similar to how Brian Trottier got hired to be head coach.

Keenan knew exactly what he was saying. And even 18 years later people are falling into his trap. HAHA

Yep this was major news back in the day...

Just Keenan being a *********. The guy you see on TV is not the guy who use to coach, at least his public persona now is quite a mask for his persona as coach and motivator.

The guy was a lunatic.

That said, the guy gave hockey a lot of funny stories. Remember when he made Kovalav play like 6 shifts in a row?

Or when he changed goaltenders 5 times in the same game

The Rangers were 30-12-3 at the All Star break and 44-22-6 right before the trade deadline. They lost 3 in a row twice the entire season. Ridiculous that people bought into this or took Keenan seriously.

I didn't buy it for a second myself, but the rumors were aplenty enough to have been a back page story in the NY papers.

As for the 6 game losing streak, I must have gotten the Rangers mixed up with another team.
