GREAT to see Fast(h) get off to a nice start in the pre-season after that gruesome injury last season.
disagree on lindberg...if i remember correctly his season last year was also derailed by injury last year. he's not a prospect at the level of fast but i think he has a real good shot to develop into a really good 4th line center, pk/faceoff specialist (ala blair betts). so he could fill a valuable role in the bottom 6 one day

I didn't mean it that way. I know what Lindberg is capable of becoming, and I'm looking forward to the day when this team has a defensive 4th line center, face-off specialist. I just meant that IMO, the news about Fast doing well pretty much overshadows any news about Lindberg doing well, at least for me, at this point.

Fasth had 14 pts in his first 12 games and everyone was hyping the kid up like crazy. Had some posts from Swedish fanbase saying that he has a shot at league MVP. Unfortunately he literally twisted his ankle inside out and just wasn't the same after that injury. Perhaps that injury may have hindered his development?

Before that, I thought he was on his way to becoming a solid 3rd line player.

Before injuring himself, he went cold for a half dozen games, which nobody noticed because the injury both ended the cold streak and overshadowed it.

Both yes and no.

He isn't the type, nor has the role on his team, to even remotely be league MVP like mentioned above.

With that said, he was the forward who received the most ice time on his team several times last season. And for example right after coming back from breaking his leg.

Tylers Seguin was used sparesly at times for Boston last season, but I would more like compare Fasth's play in the SEL last season to Seguin's play for Boston in the NHL in the games he was used alot (and he did lead Boston in scoring). He isn't the type who runs to the power play or the show 5 on 5 for his line. But he covers alot of ice, challenge D's 1 on 1 and sets up for a lot of shots. Pretty complete all over the ice. Strong along the boards. Overall, Seguin was far from being the MVP of the NHL and Fasth was far from being the MVP of the SEL, and it wasn't about being hot or cold (Seguin wouldn't have become the MVP even if everything went in for him and he scored 90-100 pts).

In terms of potential, if his injury doesn't create problems for him, I think he is a very interesting prospect for us. I don't think he has potential to become a goto player offensively in the NHL (with that I refer to players like Richards, Nash, Gabby and co, Alfie, Parise/Elias (prime) and guys like that), but besides that limit only the sky is the limit. I could see him pushing both Kreider and Hagelin in a couple of years. I have some concerns on how he will transform to the NA game/NHL, but for no good reason really. I've seen him do great in NA in the WJCs and his game is well suited. Of course, compared to say a Hagelin, he will need to make minor adjustments, but there's nothing major that needs to be changed in his game.

Spelling seems to be of to a avg start för Rögle.

They are taking it very slow with him, which is a bit suprising. I heard their GM talk earlier, and he was thrilled to get Spelling but seem to indicate that he could need time to adjust to the SEL. But for me, I heard that like that he still was going to play but not be a star from the getgo. Now I am not so sure what their plans are. They are a team that just was promoted to the SEL and hence got like 10-15 new players, and their coach seems a bit overly focused on getting his established new players set on the team. Like Spelling has been benched half of the pre-season games, and when he has played I have heard some suprising reports of how good he was (like litterary "Spelling played and he was actually pretty good"), and then he is benched again the game after. I hope he hasn't been dealt a bad hand here. He already seem to be a bit on the outside looking in and his team is talking about needing one more forward and there is also another forward (Mike Iggulden) who has not yet joined them for tax reasons so the competion will get even harder. I think many other teams would have liked to sign him and would have used him instantly in a good role. But this is kind of the problem with teams that just have been promoted, a team like that already has a roster of players who did a heroic job for them, but a 2nd tier team often needs a new 1st line to cut it in the SEL, so they basically get "five" lines, a new first plus a full team. Granted the old full team from the 2nd tier league aren't that great, it can still be pretty crowded for a young kid who is brought in because of his potential.

Thanks for the report on Spelling, Ola. He's an intriguing player for sure, so hopefully he finds some regular and consistent ice time. Keep us posted!

It can be either good or bad. Spelling gets to refine his game the way the coaches want him to, AKA, play his way for a top role. Or, he won't get the ice time to showcase his talents.

Top NCAA freshman classes

Notre Dame is #1 with Steven Fogarty and Mario Lucia who broke his foot last week and will miss the first half of the season. The injury could jeopardize Lucia's WJC chances.

Michigan is #3 with Boo Nieves and Jacob Trouba.

Minnesota is #9

Quote:
Brady Skjei and Mike Reilly both join the Gophers as true freshman to create the best defense in the nation for the upcoming season. Minnesota did not lose a defenseman from last year’s Frozen Four team, but both are talented enough they should play immediately. AJ Michaelson struggled last season in Waterloo (USHL), but if he can return to his old form will provide scoring depth. Connor Reilly and Christian Horn both come in with goal scoring capabilities, but will both see bottom six minutes most of this season when they dress.

He'd improve his stock in my eyes greatly if he posted even just 20 points this season. I know that offense is never going to be his game, but he needs to be able to contribute something.

Fast & Lindberg were both instrumental in their teams wins today.
Like I said before, both (if healthy) will have breakout years this year and be ready pushing for spots at the NYR camp next year. Maybe start in CT and make their way up? Would not be surprised if Fast makes the Swedish WC team (esp if lockout disrupts the possibility of bringing over NHLers) as well.
Two keepers we got here...

Im not so sure about that. I saw him a lot during in Skellefteå U20 junior team and know he does have offense capabilities, but of course, he's not a front edge offense talent. I wouldn't label him a defensive forward either, but a quite solid two-way forward.

Oscar actually commented himself on his offense, in an interview last week. See link further down. Its in swedish but I've translated a few quotes for ya.

On not producing so much last season:
"I still think I have a lot offense in me, but production often comes down to what kind of role you get in the team. In Skelleftea (SEL) I've mostly centered the third or fourth line."

On the preseason, training & games:
"I feel like I have stepped up a level compared to last season. I've become stronger and I've worked a lot during the summer to improve my speed.
I've been doing a lot of core exercises (focusing on back and "stomach"(?) muscles) along with legstrength excercises. Of course I've been doing other types of physical exercises as well."

On belonging to Rangers organization:
"I must say it feels really special. It's classic club with a long history, so it feels great to belong to them".

On his contacts with the Rangers:
"I spoke a lot with the Rangers during the rookie camp. And now we will be keeping continous contact over the phone, during the season.

Oscar also mentions that he's been practicing and training along with Tim (Erixon), David Rundblad and Adam Larsson, and that them making it to the NHL is spurring him to reach for the same. He also mentions that Tim has meant a lot to him, helping out and giving advice.

http://www.hockeysverige.se/article/...en-jamnare-niv

Oscar is btw now listed at 189Lbs. Last season it was 185.

Romelson- Great stuff on Lindberg!

Does anyone know if he played on the first line with Holloway and Oscar Möller? The reports had him centering the third, but he was involved in 3 goals with those two.

Ot: I've faced the stomach muscle problem myself, doesn't quit feel right but it's not always easy to remember the alternative. But it is "abdominals" (abs).

I watched HV71 and Jesper Fasth (he will still spell it with an "h").

Jesper played on the 3rd line and 2nd PP unit, and no PKing. I wouldn't be suprised if he stayed there, and if so, it could impact his production. To interpret it, on must remember that ice time always is more spread out in big ice hockey (more skating and less commercial breaks just results in that you basically cant play two lines alot more than the third). So coaches prefer three even lines instead of two. Jesper Fasth also played the most of all forwards on his team tonight, which just says how much he played 5 on 5 since he did not PK nor play a ton of PP.

And Jesper was definitely the best skater for his team to night. In OT his coach, ex Ranger Ulf Dahlén, basically put him on the ice and asked him to stay there. He had like a 1:50 shifted, rested 50 sec and was put back on before he scored the winner.

He is a great skater and he is definitely stronger on his skates than previously. Put him on the ice at like Traverse, and I doubt anyone could take the puck from him (but going up against NHL Ds is ALWAYS another story, ask someone like Omark). He has a great attitude and always work extremely hard both ways. He takes a ton of responsibility with the puck and is very good at taking it up ice. Has alot of poise with it. He is also a decent RH sniper, and often goes into that role too.

There are always question marks. But hopefully this kid can become a Swedish version of Ryan Callahan. Say a Vaalteri Filpulla type...

Product of going hard to the net, I like this a lot. Certainly willing to pay a price.

Yeah, the goal is scored at around 2:15 of the highlight Färjestad - HV71. Its a bit unfortunate that the sequence of that goal is so short, because its Jesper Fasth who skates the puck up the length of the ice almost and then drops it to the player who takes the shot, then Fasth goes hard to the net and it goes in off his skate.
