Did Peca start the tradition of not touching the confernece trophy?

This was 12 years ago, so if I'm wrong please correct me if I'm wrong. When the Sabres went to the cup in '99 and Peca didn't touch the Prince of Wales trophy he was later asked how come(it seemed a big deal at the time that he didn't touch the trophy). I think he response was something like "that's not the trophy we want". So was Peca the 1st captain to do this, or had other teams not touched before him?

Can't cite anything right now, but I remember learning back in '99 that he was following a tradition.

If Peca started it, no one else would have done it after since all that happened is we lost the Cup on possibly the most controversial goal in Stanley Cup history. Not the kind of superstition you'd want to copy.

As has already been pointed out, it's a much older tradition than that, but one that has been often successfully 'defied'. As the Wikipedia article notes, Yzerman hoisted the trophy every time and won his fair share of Cups.

Im not sure if he started it, but at the time Peca didnt want to touch it because the Caps touched it the previous year (and even skated it), then were promptly manhandled by the wings

The single stupidest tradition around in my opinion. If both teams don't touch the conference trophies, obviously one has to lose. When both teams are actually able to obtain the win, then I'll acknowledge that the tradition has sense.

I agree.

You've earned that trophy so enjoy it.

It is quite an accomplishment.
