Joonas Järvinen has signed with the Preds

A reporter of Finnish sports magazine Veikkaaja, Vili Pesu, has reported (source) that UFA D Joonas Järvinen has signed with the Preds for next season. He played last season with Pelicans in SM-liiga and is currently playing in the Worlds for Team Finland.

Are you able to give us a scouting report on him? Is he a project, or is he someone who can come in and help the Admirals? Cheers.

I'm sure he'd do pretty well in the AHL. He certainly has the potential to become an NHLer too. He's a big and strong defensive D-man with decent puck-handling abilities.

Eliteprospects tells the following:
A large and physical defenseman with good reach. Blocks shots and works hard in front of his own goal. Could improve his speed.

I've been following his career since he was 16-17, so I'm very happy for him. He is a great defensive d-man, who is build for a Barry Trotz team. Making smart easy plays but not flashy in any way. His movement is the only thing that would prevent him from making it in to the NHL, but at least he will make immediate impact in the AHL. Pair him with Ryan Ellis and magic will happen. And if the clutch and grab is coming back like it seems, Joonas should have a good NHL career. I would compared him to guys like Ken Daneyko, Sean O'Donnell, Adam Foote or Jason Smith.

Pretty sure he is coming the Nashville next year, at least for the training camp. All Finnish contracts have an NHL clause, so that's not an issue.

Im curious to see what he can do. If Gill and Bouillon both leave, we need some defense D depth.

Not sure if Joonas is ready to jump up to that role so soon. He only had a real breakout season this year. Maybe spending a little time at first in the minors would get him used to the smaller ice and the different playing style.

Lol. Don't blame Jarvinen for not getting the cup this year.

Surprised with Järvinen's play in Worlds. He is a stud.

Haha we needed more euros with names we can't pronounce. He looks solid, Im wondering with the smaller ice if movement will be less of an issue for him

I think it will. The more narrow the ice, the less lateral movement a dman needs.

I think Järvinen's game will fit well in smaller rinks. I see him beeing a NHL defenseman for years to come if everything goes well.

Today Joonas meets Canadian forwards in Worlds and I expect him delivering physicality.

How is his game compared to Eckholm's? Eckholm couldn't stick this year, but I do expect him to make it next season or atleast a call up. These players need time to acclimate to the NA ice surface.

Järvinen and Ossi Väänänen have been clearly Finland's best d-man pairing in the tournament.

I liked his play a lot in the WHC. Was definitely the best D with Ossi Väänänen on the team.

weber - josi
klein - gill/UFA (2nd pair guy)
