The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired the rights to veteran goaltender Tomas Vokoun from the Washington Capitals in exchange for their seventh-round selection in the upcoming 2012 NHL Draft.
Vokoun had to waive a no-movement clause in order for the trade to happen. He becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Great move, just the type of pick-up I've been advocating in goal. Really surprised Shero did this and am happy to see that he's not happy to just stand pat on the goalie position.
Fleury and Vokoun would be slick. I would feel comfortable every night.
And if one of them wants to play like ****, oh well. I just am VERY surprised as Shero doesn't usually put that mental part of the game on his big time players. Maybe he means business.
He's older but you could do a helluva lot worse for a back-up / potential #1 if MAF falters (assuming he's still here in the fall). We haven't talked about MAF much in the post-season threads but I think he's at least as likely to be traded as Staal is. Maybe more. That's not to say it's likely... just no less likely. If Shero looked at his numbers objectively for the last few playoff rounds and at points toward the end of the season, there's no way he can be happy with them.
Most likely this is a "wake up call". When you have BJ backing you up, you don't exactly feel like you're going to lose your job. With Vokoun backing you up, you very well could.

I agree. With his goaltending performance the last three post-seasons you could really see this team go the Redwings model and just sign a couple cheap veterans and put all its stock in position players.
Wonder how much he wants to sign for, I can't imagine he'll take more than he made last year.
With a hit of 1.5 last year and no chance of a substantial raise, he's as good as signed IMO. Probably the same amount or close to it, probably 2 years.
I'd love to add Harding as well. I was impressed by his (rather limited I know) body of work so far in the NHL.
I like Harding as well but the guy can compete for a starting job, not sure he will want to be a backup that gets 20-25 games. He will also IMO be getting more than Vokoun
McKenzie tweeted that it's probably a done deal in Pittsburgh for re-signing the guy. Wow.
If so - Shero really shocked me and I'm thinking this guy means business this season. He knows we have a window and is aggressively going after it for a second Cup.
The Penguins then signed Vokoun to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $2 million. Vokoun’s contract begins with the 2012-13 season and runs through the 2013-14 campaign. http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.ht...id=DL|PIT|home

I'd like Harding and Vokoun as 1A, 1B guys. Each getting 40 or so games sounds right; you see what you have with Harding for the future and you have a stable veteran for the present.
Both would likely come in at around Fleurys salary, perhaps a little less, and would give the Penguins flexibility going forward.
