I'd hope that's not what they're paying a backup, unless the cap really is sky rocketing.

I think he's nearing the end but I'll take him in this role plus a few more games for sure.

Honestly would not be surprised to see a MAF move since it's a 2 year 2mil per deal. As is, Pens have 7 mil locked up at goalie, which is a ton if you're not getting Rinne/Quick/Lundqvist levels of production.

Yeah it's 2 years with 2mil cap hit. That's a little more than I thought so either cap goes up or more changes are coming.

Vokoun for 2 seasons at $2M per? I can deal with that!

2 years... close to same hit (500K reasonably close although more than I expected). I called that one.

Let's see how Mr. Fleury responds, assuming he stays. I hope he does. It's impossible not to like the guy as a player and representative of the team but he needs to sack up and improve the weak points in his game. Simple as that.

I'd still be shocked to see Fleury moved.

Wow this is very interesting and out of nowhere.

$7 is indeed a hell of a lot to tie up at goalie. That would be nuts to see Fleiry traded. Who knows, maybe they value Staal more than Fleury and will look to strengthen the defense this summer.

Things just got real interesting.

I don't think he will move Fleury, but I get the feeling that if Fleury has bad games, Bylsma will at least have an option and he won't be scared to use Vokoun even in the playoffs if he needed to

I would not be shocked but honestly I'd rather see him stay and improve, then leave and we go with a dynamic duo like Washington, STL and other teams have done. First, by giving Flower another 10 games or so of rest every season might help vs. the prior weak sauce backups. Second, if this doesn't motivate a young goalie to work extra hard during the summer I don't know what will.

Bottom line: depth in Goal is as important in the playoffs as depth anywhere else.

Nothing wrong with this. We wanted insurance, we got it. We want our young goalie to not get beat up by taking on 60 games, we got it. We wanted a good teacher for MAF, we got it.

What is there to hate on this? I never would have believed Vokoun would be a Penguin. Now if Fleury gets hurt, I feel very good.

Ugh, good backup but fleurys poor play basically cost us a mil in cap space having to get a backup like this instead of a cheapie like conklin or Johnson, etc.

I also wonder if this means management feels fleurys poor play was more at fault in our struggles than overall team defense. Could be a sign of keeping status quo on the backend.

I wouldn't. He is literally the only player that I can ever remember Ray Shero publically calling out for his poor play (after Montreal). He hasn't performed up to average standards for three seasons and has essentially had one top level playoff run in his career.

He had the worst playoff of any starting goalie in something like 30 years.

Why would it shock you to move such player?

Nice.

Hopely he will sign. Really liked this guy for years. Fits our uniform.

EDIT: oh, we signed him already?!

A number of elite goalies make around 7 million. Nothing wrong with having Fleury at 5 and Vokoun at 2 for a total of 7.

Fleury won't be moved. This is just Shero fixing something that got exposed and that's nickle and diming the backup goalie spot. He needed to pay a premium so that we don't wind up overworking Fleury again and/or have no other real option if Fleury struggles.

Very good move, and surprising at that as well.

Great move. Fleury played in way too many games last season and Vokoun should definitely help fix that.

Veteran depth for an area of weakness. That's what's up.

Agreed, with this move Shero's fixed the goalie issue for the next two years as I think it's highly unlikely both Vokoun and Fleury wet the bed simultaneously.

if he plays well, maybe trading chip at a deadline? who knows?

He could also be acquired to be packaged in a deal with staal at the draft to a team who is struggling in goal and up front?

anyone know if he has a NMC or NTC?

Fleurys not moving this offseason. This is what they are up too i suspect:

The management of the team can see Marc's play has become a giant liability, but hes still popular among the team and fans. They can't outright replace him without some risk. Their best option is to find a reliable backup to lighten the load and possibly take the job if we reach March and Fleury is playing poor. Vokoun could fill in for a year giving them enough time to land a real replacement.

This was not a good thing for Fleury fans, trust me. Hes on borrowed time now. He can't have an offseason like hes had for the last 3 years.

I didn't even think of that angle. Great point, Cole. Even more reason to like this. I'm sure he was helpful to guys like Holtby and Neuvirth in Washington, although neither of those guys has Fleury's experience so dynamic could be different.

Scares me too, I hope the guys don't take it a wrong way. I mean i'm sure they realize he was bad in the Philly series and management is simply doing it's job. Fleury will have all the chances in the world again, just that Bylsma will not be as patient
