Is there room for Franson?

I just came across this on TSN. I personally would like Franson to sign and have a regular spot in the line up.

Just saw this too. I think he will get packaged in a deal for either Ryan or Nash, or maybe a lesser player.

Just read it too, he has every right to expect playing time. From a bit before the all-star break and on he was a stud.

Mistake if we move him IMO unless it's for an upgrade at C. Definitely a keeper.

I just read that as well. Unfortunately for him he had a spot on this team but Gardiner took it from him. Good luck on being guaranteed a spot, no entitlement on this team...

There better be room for Franson now that Schenn has moved on. Franson has the potential to be a top 4 d man. There was a reason he was paired with Shea Webber. All he needs to do is use his size a bit more.

I thought he might be moved in a package deal too. I would like him to stay and get some power play time. I'm just not sure he will get the ice time he wants and is ready for.

It was a joke when Franson was sat for Komisarek. Cody will play every game this season, barring injury.

I won't be surprised if he is moved but if he still here when the season starts there better be room for him in the line-up and I think there is still big potential for a top 3 d-man.

He MAY get packaged for help up front. Either way, he'd slot in as a 4-5 with PP capabilities. I"d like to find space for him, but depending on the return, i may not hesitate.

I think he'll be moved with Tyler Bozak in a deal for Roberto Luongo.

Franson is trade-bait.

Understandable if we move him for a larger package, but I have no problem bringing him back another season. I think he will be playing with something to prove this year.

Depth defender.

He'll be fighting for playing time again this year.

Big score by taking on Lombardi wasn't such a big win afterall.

Franson was not one of the better defensemen when he played. Maybe he was used to being protected in Nashville. No loss if he is moved.

For whatever reason, Carlyle and Wilson didn't seem to like this guy much. It was pretty obvious this season that he was at the very least, capable of playing on the bottom pairing. He needs to be given a legit shot on the second pairing, he has the potential to be a good top 4 d-man, has good size and good offensive instincts. We need to use him properly and work with his strengths. He's starting to use his size more which is encouraging and his skating seems to have improved at least a little from his Nashville days.

I feel like Franson is the Kadri of our defense. Hopefully both of these players have good seasons next year.

Is there room for Franson? LOL is this serious. We have a hole on the right side with Schenn gone.

Gunnarsson Phaneuf
Gardiner Franson
Liles Komisarek
Holzer

If he does not get traded he should play a lot as he is better than others on our D core. Liles should be moved as he is redundant....still can not understand his extension.

Under contract right now:

Phanuef
Gunnarson
Gardiner
JML
Komisarek

that's 5. Franson is the 6th if he re-signs so unless we sign another UFA defender or a kid like Holzer, Reily, etc. earns a spot then there is room for Franson, hell even if that does happen I imagine Komisarek is the one who ends up scratched.

And cap geek says we have $12 million in cap space since we're not getting Suter or Parise then we also have cap room for him too.

Franson went from playing 80 games in his last year in Nash to playing 57 games on the leafs last year. That would almost suggest the leafs have a "better" defence than Nashville which sounds ridiculous to say. Perhaps, fitting into the new system was difficult to him and limited his time.

But the defensive line up looks like

Phaneuf Gunnar
Liles x
Gardiner x
x

And between Franson, Komisarek and Holzer - those three need to fill in the "x" on that side of the ice they all play. Also one of them will sit in press box. Should be fun.

I think the Leafs coaches saw Franson as a whiner and sat him. Whining about playing the left side, whining about ice time, whining about wearing #22 instead of #4.

I will agree that he was one of our better defencemen and should have been played - especially over Komisarek and Schenn on most nights.

Burke said he likes having 8 capable NHL defensemen on the roster. Franson isn't going anywhere unless he's packaged for a big name.

According to RW, Franson is good enough to play on Nashville's defense but not good enough to play on Toronto's

There's a reason he was paired with Shea Weber? When did he ever play significant time with Weber?

The guy has never been anything more than a #6 defenseman playing seriously sheltered minutes.

Two different coaches and 25 games combined in the pressbox as a healthy scratch, on a bottom 5 NHL team with the 29th goals against.

I think the writing is in the wall here.

I don't expect the Leafs to begin next season with the current defense in tact, and Franson is the least likely to be there at this time.
