The more I thought of getting Jags, the less I wanted him. Considering that he slowed down crazy amounts near the end of last season... I don't want to see how long before age catches up with him out west... More planes than trains and automobiles out here.

Yea I don't understand the hate he was the only top 4 defenseman that was RH and a pp QB, we had no bargaining power but it is easy to hate us.

after Wideman's deal, it was to be expected that Carle's deal would be about the same.

I don't see how this makes Wideman's deal any better though. It still takes up the same amount of our cap space as before (when no one knows yet what the cap will be), and I'd personally rather have Carle.

Carle is a worse version of Gio atleast we don't have a Wideman.

This. As good as Carle is, we have a similar dman in Gio already who is better.

As for "at least we don't have a Wideman", were you having some wobbly pops last night lol? Cuz we do have a Wideman and I am glad because he brings a different element to our blueline.

And yes, this contract does make Wideman's look a whole lot better.

I meant before wither Carle or Wideman signed, we already had a better version of Carle but we had no version of Wideman. We addressed a need which is a true pp QB.

Yup. Hudler was a preferable option, in my opinion.

Purcell just got a three-year, $13.5 million contract extension. If he can continue to put up 65 points, that's a hell of a deal.

Yea anything under 5 million for a 60+ point player is a good deal.

I like Purcell, he's turning into a heck of a hockey player.

I figured you would be really upset by this. Now that he's signed for so long, he's less likely to be a Flame at the end of 2013-14.

I remember when Purcell was coming out of college as an FA, and Lombardi said he was a future first liner after signing him. And then a couple years later, the Kings traded him for a rental in Halpern and he became a first liner... oops.

Selanne signed for 4.5 million. Pretty good for 42 yr old 66 point getter. I hope Iginla has the longevity of Selanne.

This is why I use the bar of saying Iggy will easily make over 5 and probably closer to 6 on his new deal. Iggy is our franchise guy, I see him signing a 3 year extension at 6 million (Cammy money) on his next contract. Then he'll probably go year to year like Selanne is doing now until he retires.

And yeah, I would love a guy like Purcell or even Stafford for that matter on the Flames. But with having Iginla, Tanguay, Cammy, Glencross and now Hudler, we don't really have a spot or need for either of those guys. But I'd bet money that Purcell rips it up next year and has a career season playing with Stamkos. Great sleeper for a hockey pool anyways.

NHL opens the new CBA discussions with the following offer as per RenLavoie from RDS:

Quote:
1-reduce players hockey related revenues to 46% from 57 %.

2-10 seasons in NHL before being UFA.

3-contracts limites to 5 years

4-no more salary arbitration.

5- entry-level contract 5 years instead of 3.
Obviously this is just the start of the negotiations, but if the NHL actually expects any of the above to be even remotely palatable for the NHLPA, this could be a very long lockout.

Its simple negotiating tactics you ask for way to much and then meet in the middle, they probably want 4 year entry level deal (like NBA and NFL), limited salary arb, contracts to be limited to 7 years, 5 years until UFA, and 50% revenue but by asking for so much they can give in a little and seem like they are meeting in the middle when really it is what they want.

OT: Saw Spiderman today and if you are a nerd like me you will like it. It follows the amazing spider man series pretty well and the cast is great.

It's ridiculous, I know. It may just be the opening salvo, but it really highlights the disconnect between the NHL and the NHLPA, whose members and leader have gone on record saying they feel like they sacrificed enough in 2005 and aren't interested in giving up more. Given the likely separation between the two parties, I think it's all but assured that we get a shortened season next year. Most hockey pundits are already speculating that the owners are entirely comfortable in missing the first couple of months of the season, what with competition with the NBA and MLB and some suggest the owners are targeting the Winter Classic as the opening date.

On the flip side, a shortened or locked out season would mean Baertschi along with Reinhart, Aliu, Nemisz, Horak, and even Brodie would play in the AHL. At least the Heat would be entertaining.

Usually, if you start too high, it may be very difficult to negotiate.

That offer will not sit well with the players, not the greatest opening offer. At least have the decency to start with something mildly reasonable?
