Kuba Won't Be Back

So Murray isn't planning on bringing Kuba back, and he's hoping one of Borowiecki or Wiercioch make the team ensuring that Garrioch will have to use a spell check every ten minutes.

So that means Murray is planning for a defense that looks like:

Karlsson - ???
Gonchar - Cowen
Borowiecki / Wiercioch - Phillips

I believe you are close to what it will look like.

Really not surprised about the Kuba situation, he is 35, coming off a good year, so I would imagine he wants ~$4M and term (3 years). This just isn't a match for where the Sens are in the rebuild.

Could be we take a run at Suter then too. We've got the space.
Gilroy would still be in the plans and up against Borowiecki and Wiercioch

Can't say I'm surprised. If I'm not mistaken, this will be a 35+ contract for Kuba, and he's not exactly Mr. Healthy. Last season was not the norm for him. Also, I'd guess that the Sens and Kuba were at least $1M apart in their salary negotiations.

Regardless of how people feel about him, he was a pretty steady player last year and that is a lot of minutes for someone to eat up. Will be interesting to see how Cowen and Karlsson work together. Wonder if Phillips is up to the task?

An upgrade is the right move. Kuba was a stopgap while he was here - sometimes a good one, sometimes a bad one. But it's time to find this team a top-4 d-man somewhere between the age of 23 and 35.

We have enough money and assets that we should be able to land somebody, even if we have to overpay him a bit.

I don't think it's a huge surprise.

Both Boro and Weir are defenseman that play on the left side, and if management thinks that we can get 82 games in the NHL between the two of them, we really only need to sign one defenseman that can play on the right side.

Personally, Brian Lee wouldn't have been the worse option there, but that ship has sailed. Maybe we can trade for Rundblad back.

Of course a top-4 of:

Cowen-Karlsson
Phillips-Gonchar

isn't really awe-inspiring at all. But next year is really only year 2 of the 3 year rebuild process.

Depends who you ask.

I thought he was pretty good for his age. Made some dumb boneheaded plays but overall he was a lot better then his 1st year as a Senator. He's lost his big shot from the blueline though which was one of the things that made him so feared.

i though the had a great playoffs... again especially for his age.
Picked up the puck movement and scoring since all the pressure was on Karlsson

If we can sign Gill or Souray from UFA to a 1 year deal, I'd be really happy.

I would have given him 1 year $4.75 million.

I just don't see Wiercioch making the NHL permanently this season. Boro I could argue might, but now Wiercioch.

The team only needs 82 games between the two of them because I can't see management not signing at least one depth defenseman in the off-season.

It's not like they are going to gamble by playing the two of them together on the 3rd pairing.

Then I'll expand.

If he gets 5 million on the open market, then I understand Murray's decision to let him go.

Kuba wouldn't have taken it, though. He wants term, and I'm sure he'll sacrifice a bigger 1-year offer for a 3-year deal.
