Him, Galiev and Schilling probably have the best shots but I wouldn't count on any of them making it. I don't think Marshall is really an NHL factor and Kundratek is pretty well blocked on the right side. Otherwise he may be the most worthy in a limited role. Maybe they give a shiny new forward pick a shot if they really turn heads in the pre-season but that's assuming they make the pick(s) (and no lockout).
Thats the scary thing. We really do not have much to work with from the cup board. Hershey is relatively empty on prospects.

At the conclusion of the season the Caps had 6 players that would become UFAs come July 1:

Vokoun - traded to Pittsburgh for a 7th round pick
Halpern - told that the Caps had no intention of resigning him
Knuble - told that the Caps had no intention of resigning him
Semin - says he will test the FA market, but may give the Caps the opportunity to match an offer?
Wideman - says he would like to come back
Aucoin -

I do not want to see Wideman back, even if he took a significant hometown discount. Hopefully GMGM can work his magic and get a mid round pick for his rights.

Wait and see with Semin, but I hope the Caps find a coach before July 1 as this may play a significant role in Semin's decision.

I want to agree. What worries me is that we haven't heard anything about it...not that that means anything one way or another really, but we've seen official indications that Knuble and Halpern won't be back (older players, yeah) and Vokoun's rights traded. Last year, there were reports that they hadn't even made offers to Laich (which of course delighted me), and then there he was signing that ridiculous deal just in time. You're probably right though. I mean come on.

Anyway, I would like to get Radulov. I agree that the Capitals are one of the NHL teams he would probably play for, and I think his offensive game is more useful to the team than Semin's at this point. I don't care about the supposed attitude problems. Bring in the right coach and that can be managed. It's the organizational culture that matters anyway (not that the Capitals don't have an abysmal one). I still think it's more likely that Semin is re-signed. Like 51/49 more likely.

Who else thinks that Caps should try to get Lightning's Adam Hall? Almost 60% FO... Would be deadly 4th line with Hendy to his left and Beagle to his right.

Maybe but beagle is a better center IMO. Don't like the idea of him on wing

McClemment should be our top shutdown center target IMO followed by Pahlsson (this all assuming Kelly gets resigned). Hall could be a nice stopgap until the deadline (we're still allowed to shop at the deadline I believe). A totally conservative lineup I could see (no trades/no impossible FA signings/easily under the cap) would be

Ovechkin Backstrom Brouwer
Laich Jokinen Johansson
Chimera McClemment Winnik
Hendricks Beagle Ward

Alzner Carlson
Jackman Green
Hamrlik Orlov
Schultz

Holtby
Neuvirth

Not my favorite but at least everything except the 2nd line seems pretty set. Sort that out at the deadline.

I do like the trade rumor with the Wings. i wish that came true.

A 3rd line with Chimera and Helm would wear teams down to the ground. Maybe throw Brouwer with them to hit people.

He's undersized, but there are smaller guys in the bigs. I see him as 1st callup at worst, probably getting 20-40 game if he doesn't make the team out of camp. I'll be a little concerned about his longterm prospects otherwise...

Only issue with Wideman is he absolutely needs a good defensive partner to cover his mistakes. He didn't exactly have that luxury being paired with fumble feet Schultz most nights. I see Orlov most likely taking Wideman's spot.

I also believe that GMGM will package the two first rounders and make a deal happen one way or another.
Pretty sure Green was healthy when we got Wideman.

Green was hurt last season when we got Wideman. Green then got healthy and Wideman hurt his leg.

I still like the Wideman trade. It made a lot of sense for the remainder of Wideman's contract term. But there's no sense in resigning him going forward, given his cap hit and the emergence of Orlov.

Bingo. Even though wideman was awful at some points with green gone all year and Carlson full jackass mode he saved the caps at some points

He will be rewarded for that. Just hopefully not by the caps

Really really hoping i dont see Radulov or jokkinen anywhere near our roster.

Bummed that laich and ward cost a combined $7.5 million.

Hoping wideman long gone by the time season starts.

Don't know much about Adam hall. Wish we could have EDM's other Hall.

Really happy i'm not a kings fan right now. Otherwise i would be experiencing some major dread & sleep deprivation. Being forced to head back to NJ for game 7 would be excruciating, big time.

Out of curiosity, what is everyone's take on MP? Is he not ready to take over a 2nd/3rd line C roll? I thought he played well when he was given the chance. He seems like he plays with a ton of effort and has the skills to produce.
