The fact that Kesler did it doesn't mean Staal will. The Penguins would only trade for Semin's rights if they intended to re-sign him, which they could probably do. Keeping that in mind, those proposed trades are absolutely abysmal, even without considering how much they strengthen the Penguins. (I'm ignoring how they would make the money work.) Green has had his issues recently, but overall he is a vastly superior player to Staal on his own.

After 500 NHL games, Kesler had a 59 point season and two 70+ point seasons.

And Staal has gotten at least 1:54 PP time per game since his sophomore year (he got 1:31/g his rookie year).

You want to know the reason he hasn't put up PP points? He sucks on the PP.

And yes, I would rather have all of those other centers than Staal.

It would definitely be nice to have Backstrom, Ribeiro, Marleau, and Plekanec down the middle

That's only like 1/5 of their PP time

I just find it funny that our very own Brooks Laich has been much-maligned for having such a large portion of his production in 2008-09 and 2009-10 coming on the PP. Yet Staal is elevated for not producing in his PP time.

Laich 2008-09: 24 PPP in 2:38 PPTOI/G
Laich 2009-10: 27 PPP in 2:57 PPTOI/G

Staal in 2008-09: 6 PPP in 2:19 PPTOI/G
Staal in 2009-10: 5 PPP in 1:54 PPTOI/G

(These were Staal's last two full seasons)

Legit question, is Staal's PP time coming with the Crosby-Malkin-Letang unit?

No idea.

But considering Crosby and Malkin were both over 5:22 in 2008-09 and over 4:52 in 2009-10, I'd say there's a pretty good chance there was overlap.

Your claim is Caps employees read us.
And we don't have 2C yet.

I would call this OUTLANDISH.

No, really, how could it be?!

Kesler's 5th season he was no longer stuck on his team's 3rd line and is comparable to the season Staal had this year. Kesler is faster than Staal and has a better shot but Staal is a lot bigger and more durable and better suited for playing a shutdown role as a result. Once he gets to a team where he's a 2C with ok offensive linemates he'll be a 25-30 g/60-70 point center capable of eating the toughest minutes and always in the hunt for Selke. I'd be all for it if he could be signed long term.

Pittsburgh's always had a horrible PP for some reason if I recall correctly. I doubt we'd be after him for PP help.

I don't see Staal as a playmaker. He can score some goals, it's true... but I don't get the impression that the game is flowing through him when I watch him.

He is like younger Stoll-like center probably. 3C with some skills. But what do I know.

Kesler's not much of a playmaker either.

Staal hasn't been stuck on the Pens 3rd line. Oftentimes, Malkin and Crosby have played together, or Malkin has played on Staal's wing.

Also, Staal's TOI/G has been over 19:00 every year save his rookie season (18:16).

He's had the opportunities to produce, and simply hasn't .

Except this season which we consider an outlier, while Kesler's 59 point season is a stepping stone.

Either way that's an overpayment. Laich + 1st >> 1 year of Staal, Laich + 2 1sts can get you a better center.

And how on earth is Staal more durable than Kesler? Because he's bigger?

Kesler's missed 5 games in the last 5 years.

Staal's missed 60 in the last 2.

Kesler's played through a ton of injuries and seems to need serious surgery every offseason now. Staal had things like breaking your hand from being hit with a puck and getting cut by a skate. Torn labrum followed by major shoulder surgery does not a shining long career make.

Word is that Boston signed Kelly for 3 years/$12M.

Scratch him off the list.

Wouldn't want to go anywhere near Kelly at $4M. If you think $4.5M is bad for Laich...

Cue the "He's better than Laich" drivel.

And yeah, I wouldn't touch him at that rate either, and I really like the player.

They're going to have to make a trade if they really want to add a scoring-line center.

They won't. It's clear they are enamored of Johansson and MP is around to push him if necessary. We're rounding out our "scoring" lines with an acquisition along the lines of Brad Boyes.

While I like Staal as a player and what he brings to the table, he would not be my preferred choice as our 2C.

Preferably I would like to see us trade for a more experienced center, to replace the leadership lost if the reports about Knuble not returning turns out to be true.

One option that I would like to at least explore is Andy McDonald. He is a veteran, with a Stanley Cup win in his bag. He has been nearly a PPG guy for almost his entire career and he adds a lot of leadership and could definently fill the 2C role.

He has recently been playing on the wing, but was a great C with Anaheim when they won the Cup. His injury record is a bit of a concern, but with Schwartz and Tarasenko, both coming up in the Blues system, he could possibly be the odd man out, which could mean that his price tag could be a bit more reasonable for us.
