But the point isn't that he missed it one year or another. It's that he's missed it every year.
I get that, but what year was he playing on a team where he could reasonably be expected to be the difference between making or missing the playoffs?

Carlson, however, wouldn't be, so while the Caps would retain his negotiating rights, they would lose leverage on his next deal (and any potential trade negotiations).

Someone with CBA knowledge correct me if I'm wrong please.
Kennedy was technically UFA on 7/1 after not being qualified. Any RFA becomes UFA when not qualified. It's procedural to retain their rights and the RFA can then accept it or continue negotiating. In Kennedy's case not qualifying him took away Kennedy's ability to take them to arbitration.

Ah, I see. But Carlson isn't arbitration eligible yet, correct? So the Caps would have literally no reason not to qualify him.

$6.6 for that?! No thanks.

I highly doubt that, unfortunately. If they finally decided to rebuild, it'd be pretty significant futures going back. Either way they'd want at least one roster player. I'm not certain if the price of acquisition would be prohibitive.

The year before he came to Calgary, the Flames were a playoff team. Actually, they had made it in each of the five seasons before he arrived.

Huh. Any other notable acquisitions/departures/injuries/dropoffs in play that season (significant improvement of a division opponent perhaps?)? If not, I'll have to concede that point.

Shultz and Ward: 2 more years @ $6MM

JayBow: 2 more years @ 6.6MM

Michael Cammalleri left town, taking his chemistry with Iginla with him. But he was only in Calgary for one year, and they had been in the playoffs before that.

Not going to happen. Where is the idea that Bouwmeester would be available for cheap coming from?

I would take literally any contract in the NHL if Schultz + Ward was the price. Too bad that'll never happen ever.

Eh, even minus Cammalleri they're still arguably a playoff bubble team. I'll agree (without doing more than superficial investigation) that they probably should have made the dance that year. Correlation doesn't necessarily imply causation, but there's certainly at least some responsibility that can be put on Bouwmeester there.

The cyber-mythical rebuild that we've created for Calgary..

As much as he gets dumped on, he is still a great setup man. His contract is interesting, but does expire one year sooner.

I did neglect the long-term injury contracts... those I obviously wouldn't take (DiPietro anyone?)

I would be the worst fan contract in the league

If they were rebuilding, they'd want futures or young players. Neither of those describes Schultz or Ward.

Chris Stewart signed a 1-yr, 3M deal with the Blues. Someone's on the hot seat...

Calgary isn't rebuilding, but they are cutting salary (dramatically so, you might say). Last I'd read they want to be down in the 55-58 mil area... which is just above the floor. And yet still "going for it" if Feaster is to be believed.

If all that's true, JBo probably is on the way out (sounds like they don't want to move Iginla and it's tough for them to cut salary elsewhere) but they couldn't be taking salary back.

Is it a cash thing? Do we have anyone making less than their cap hit to send that way?

I'm assuming it's about cash but I really don't know the details.

Laich is the only player that probably fits the bill, but only by a bit (500k). Everyone else is either even more marginal (50k? for Hendricks) or not being moved (Ovi, Backstrom) I think.

JBo may be worth the gamble only if Laich goes the other way. The Caps would save about $9million in salary that GMGM can overpay other mediocre players with even if JBo doesn't work out. Just don't expect JBo to compete at all, he makes Johansson look like Rambo.

Do you guys think #16 and MJ is enough to land a 2C? Maybe throw in a minor piece? I really see this as another lost season without a 2C and not a rookie either. MJ is such an luxury on a team that doesn't deserve it. He will never be the 1C/2C this team needs. As a winger he is overkill IMO.
