Defensive Lineup in 2-3 years.

I want everyones opinion. What do you believe our defensive lineup will look like in 2 to 3 years?

I believe:

Larsson - Merrill
Greene - Volchenkov
Urbom - Gelinas

More like in 5 years

Larsson-Merrill
Gelinas-Scarlett
Fayne-Urbom

However, it is not time for offseason threads

Definitely here:
Fayne
Larsson
Merrill

Probably here:
Greene
One of Urbom/Gelinas, I doubt both make it as NHL regulars

And probably a UFA or two.

We're still in the playoffs, but I always love combining the current state of the team and the prospects we have coming up to form a hypothesis.

Most definitely:
Larsson
Merrill
Greene

Possibilities:
Fayne
Gelinas
Urbom
Scarlett
Helgeson

This is discounting UFA's, trades, and only includes guys in the organization (prospect-wise) that I feel will make a real impact.

2013-2014

Gelinas 23 Larsson 21

Merrill 22 Fayne 27

Greene 31 Volchenkov 31

Do not discount Scarlett, Urbom, Helgeson, and Gedig, but here is the problem...

The Devils are severely lacking in quality forward depth in their prospect pool. Now I know Henrique and Josefson have graduated to the big club, but aside from Reid Boucher I am not very confident that the other forward prospects can contribute much offensively.

Therefore with Parise a UFA, the Devils likely to give up their number 1 this year, and Elias, Sykora, and Zubrus on the decline I think Lou will need to trade one of these elite d-prospects for a blue chip forward sometime in the near future.

Yup. At the very least, a serviceable top-six guy.

I am shocked you guys are not yearning for Eric Gelinas. He would bring a skill set that this team sorely needs. He is 6-4, only 21 years old, and scored 16 goals this past year for Albany. We need offense from the blueline badly!!

Gelinas is my favorite prospect at this point, along with Wedgewood and Merrill.

If he can continue to improve defensively and develop even more of a physical edge to his game, he could be a serious impact player.

Volchenkov can't play top 4 minutes now, in 3 or 4 year he's done.

God willing he's gone in three, hopefully two. Sal, at 36 and after sitting out an entire year, outperformed him big time for the majority of the season.

I want Urbom.

I'm very eager to see if he can keep it up, but the season he had is an excellent sign. I always liked him, but the season he had was a shocker even to me.

Just wait until Merrill plays for Albany. Have a feeling he's going to impress in his first pro season too.

Hope Merrill turns out, cause if you are hoping for Urbom and Gelinas you are hoping for a prayer.

I dunno, we haven't seen what Gelinas is capable of at the NHL yet but Urbom's definitely shown promise. Every time he's been called up to the NHL team he's done things that make one go WOW. Not consistently, but only because he's only been around for a couple games a season so far. In my opinion the reason why they sent him back to the AHL team is not as much his performance more than it was allowing him to build more confidence, at the level he's sure to thrive in. Some wanted Larsson to play in the AHL this year because he could learn and build his confidence at a level he would be almost sure to dominate.

Obviously, you never know with prospects. They could show promise one season but easily fade later on. But what both Gelinas and Urbom have shown so far is cause to be optimistic for what they may become.

Not sure what you mean, Jim. Urbom could have played with the NHL team this year if need be, and Gelinas just scored 16 goals while turning in an even rating on a pretty poor Albany team.

You have definitely seen a different Urbom than I have. He has been extremely weak defensively every time I've seen him and his offensive skills are pedestrian at best.

Despite the two beauties he's scored?

In all likelihood, no, he won't put up serious points. But he could be a very solid two-way defender.

The year out probably helped Sal's legs in the long run. Would not re-sign him though, let some other team take him on when the legs go n a year or two.

Prospects are prospects. You don't know about any of them, especially defensive ones. We ask this two years ago how many would have Fayne in the lineup? None, even here.

I'll take that bet

In case anyone cares, Hale played 327 games
