Colorado has a lot of work to do, and there are going to be many deals like this. This is what young players with "potential" expect these days. The downside of having a young team. You get cheap ELCs, but as soon as it comes time to resign, you have to pay to keep them.

Are the Avs copying the Panthers move by overpaying to get near the cap floor?

They have a LOT of players to sign.

And well, now they have 39.4 million for 11 players (assuming 70mil summer cap)... I don't think they're in any sort of danger of having money problems.

The Avs have a ton of money to spend, so this doesn't hurt them too much, but it is a bit steep, and it's a little late in his development curve to be paying for potential. We'll see how it works out, I guess.

Maybe a little pricey, but cap wont be an issue for the Avs and god knows some other team would have paid more on July 1.

Exactly.

He'd be signed around that on the open market which, as we know, inflates values. Either keep him or don't, the price is the price. He's shown enough flashes to make me not too upset with the length.

Paid about what he deserves IMO. Buys out his prime years, and he was UFA I believe. Not a bargain, but he would have gotten more on the open market.

This is going to be such a brutal UFA class after Parise-Suter-Schultz.

I'd agree that as a budget team, the Avs have an eye on the cap floor, so it doesn't hurt to overpay a bit. Jones had the leverage: he was one of only 10 UFAs who scored 20 or more goals last year, and he was the youngest member of that group.

That said, if you're giving Jones $4 mil, where does that put Duchene and O'Reilly on the pay scale? Granted, they're RFA, but still...

Way too much. Making almost double what Teddy Purcell is making? Insane.

Seems pricey, but that's always how UFA season goes.

Very happy for the locak kid. Cashed in like a boss.

Anyone think Parise and Suter make less than $8 per?

This is what happens when the salary goes up, the average talented player gets more and more.

He would have probably gotten the same in the open market, so I'm going to say this is good value for the Avalanche.

The McGinn-Stastny-Jones line was pretty good for them to end the year.

No...I don't watch the Avs play much.

He had 39 seconds per game (6th on the team) on the Pk last year, 1:27 (6th on the team) per game the year before.

That's regularly used, but hardly a case of a guy being a coaches first, or even second option on the PK.

Nothing else about his numbers jump out as him being that good of a 2 way guy.

Looks like he took a 500k discount for some term on his deal. Word of mouth is that Jonesy really wanted to return but that he was held up by the possibility of getting a big pay day on the market.

I like this deal, as well as McLeod's it sets a good example of what it means to work hard for the team and the team will take care of you. Both of those guys have been Avs since they broke into the league and will remain Avs for at least a little while longer.

Jones has shown he is capable of scoring 30 goals, perhaps if he has some job security the concern he voiced over contract negotiations won't affect his play as badly.

Purcell has never been a pending UFA, so that's a horrible comparison.

Because we didn't need to play him on the PK while we had Winnik. Jones is a pretty good defensive player.

Put it this way, he's NOT a defensive liability out there.
