4 mil was about what I would've been willing to pay on the open market.

If he continues his goalscoring production and has finally shaken the injury bug for good, this could end up being a very nice deal.

how can people say that 20+ goal scorers are third liners? There are what, maybe half a dozen teams in the league that get 20 goal production from a 3rd line player?

They're living in a fantasy world where every top 6 player scores 30 goals and 60 points or more.

could also be people saying they are 3rd liners because they may play on the 3rd line for various reasons.

could just be line chemistry or depth, example i wouldn't call Jordan Staal a 3rd liner

good signing for Jones tho

Doug Armstrong would have signed him for 3m.

Might look bad, but Colorado has to get to the floor somehow, and it's not like he hasn't produced.

Not like we have raises to Duchene and RoR coming up this year or anything... if anything this shows management is willing to spend

Seems like most people saying it's over payment are those who do not regularly follow the Avalanche.

Good extension for the A.

People forget that Jones is 6'2 210lbs as well.

Someone said it earlier.. 21 points in 29 games for the last two and a half months of the year after the deadline.

Based on this and the year he had prior at 27 goals, I can see why he got that much.

No hes not extremely physical as far as hitting but he is tough in the corners not afraid to go hard to the net and is deceivingly fast for his size. "Power Forwards" are also trending up now with big physical teams like LA & PHX having so much success. Especially when it's Size + skill.

Big forwards who bring a solid all around game and can put up 20 goals a year while struggling are only going to get more expensive. At 27 going on 28 (In August) and a UFA it's a fair deal when you look at it from all angles.

His injuries have all be unrelated as well so it's hard to label him with any kind of serious "injury" warning especially considering that he was healthy this year.

With Jones @ 6'2 210, Landeskog @ 6'1 204 (And plays more like 6'3 230), McGinn @ 6'1 210, and the 5'11 190lbs ball of hate himself Downie. That is a serious amount of size/physicality, skill, and speed in the top 9. Mueller is a question mark but @ 6'2 204 hes another big, fast forward.

I think anyone can see where Colorado is going with their roster.

I'd imagine Duchene will probably get a similar deal to Tavares but with the Jones signing what do you think O'Reilly gets?

UFA vs RFA. What OReilly makes will have nothing to do with Jones.

Even with those, you're still way under the cap. Unless you're paying them both 7+M or something, which is absurd.

But he's also the better player no way he agrees to sign for less.

Those were the main two, but if you'd like me to go on...

Steve Downie
Erik Johnson
Mark Olver
Peter Mueller
Ryan Wilson
Jay McClement
Jamie McGinn

I still think the RFA's will be a little cheaper. It's just the way it's always been. Young + RFA = less power/ less money

Duchene I am guessing 4.5M and O'Reilly @ 3.5-4M, 4-6 years.

As far as Hunwick goes.. People need to remember that he was willing to be the 7th defenseman this year with no complaints. In that light.. It's really not that bad of a backup plan if Elliott or Barrie are not ready.

If they are.. He played well enough at the end of last year that he would have a good chance of getting picked up on the waiver wire. Not a bad option when a player is willing to sit 7th string, be happy about it, then play balls out when called upon.

Colorado now has over $27 million committed to 4 forwards, three defensemen, and two goalies. They still have to re-sign Duchene, O'Reilly, Johnson, Downie, McGinn plus others.

How exactly will Colorado be under the cap floor? Do expect the floor to be over $55-60 million?

Slight overpayment that could could/should turn out well for Colorado, especially if he puts up 25/50 playing with Stastny and gets more playing time.

Ok for all of you people worried about Colorado making it to the salary floor.

Jan Hejda ($3.250m) / Ryan O'Byrne ($1.800m)
Matt Hunwick ($1.600m) / Stefan Elliott ($0.900m)
Shane O'Brien ($1.600m) /
GOALTENDERS
Semyon Varlamov ($2.833m)
Jean-Sebastien Giguere ($1.250m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $56,408,333; BONUSES: $2,710,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $13,891,667

This is without even signing someone like Carle or Suter to play along side Erik Johnson, and without signing a free-agent forward either. DON'T WORRY WE GOT THIS thanks for the concern..

It's actually 6 forwards and 29.3M

Stastny, Jones, Landeskog, Hejduk, McLeod, Kobasew

Hejda, O'Byrne, Hunwick

Most of our important players are RFAs which means we have cap space (Good luck on offer sheets) and power.

I love David Jones, and I'm sorry to see he won't be a free agent this year, but that's a rich contract for a player with an injury history and who has only hit 20 goals twice.

Actually players are human.. There is still a sense of "Seniority" so age comes into play, and I don't really see how you could think the RFA status will not make a difference?

For a team with so much cap space they are not getting offer sheets and RFA players have very little power. I don't think either one of Duchene or O'Reilly would do all that well in arbitration either.

One had a horrible season and the other had a break out season but could easily be looked at as unproven when trying to ask for a big contract.

Johnson thank god has not broken out yet either.. Management has the power over all three.

So 37 pts in 72 GP now worth 4M/year... Well, Malkin then should demand like 12M...
