Trevor Gillies signs with KHL

http://sulia.com/channel/hockey/f/08...source=twitter

Chris Botta

For the #Isles the departure of Trevor Gillies to the KHL and possible exit of Micheal Haley is not even a little bit of a deal. Gillies was a loyal combatant for the NYI and they treated him better than any of his numerous previous employers. Gillies is a good man, so I wish he and his family well. Time will tell on Haley, who was disappointed over his perception of not getting a fair shot with the NYI last season. Gillies and Haley are replaceable. It's up to the NYI to decide whether they need to be replaced. That's all.

He always came off as a good dude. But as someone who is not a huge fan of his role, all I can say is thank god.

See, even the great NHL'ers are signing with the KHL, Don't draft a Russian !!!! Just joshing, best of luck Gillies, I'll never forget that stare of his, scared me through the TV lol. Isles need to sign a tough guy or 2 in the offseason. They should sign that goon the Rangers traded for at the deadline, AND Konopka.

Hopefully Gillies does well over there. Haley is next to leave. The Isles owe him nothing.

I will actually misss this guy. Weird. Meeting him at adventureland was awesome and was an insane fighter. I have no problem with him being a 14th/15th forward because I always like to keep a heavyweight handy but in no way was Trevor getting a 1-way deal so he gets to go to the KHL for some good money (probably, and I'd bet good money it's better than AHL money) and gets to play with his enforcer buddies there.

I just hope he doesn't pull the same crap as Yabo and Brennan and Mirasty.

I am not going to lose sleep about Gillies, but as some mentioned, having him in the system was never a bad thing. A bit of a nutcase on the ice, but someone who had his teammates back no matter what. Best of luck to him.

That said, if little offeseason movement is expected then I hope Haley is retained. In my opinion he could be very similar to Asham (a player I'd kill to get back) and provides a desperately needed element to this team.

If not, then someone better order Martin a heavy bag for his offseason training. I'd love to see what this kid is made of without having to shoulder ALL this teams physical duties by himself.

Too bad about Gillies and possibly Haley. I understand its a new NHL but I also still see a value having these players around.....and yes on the bench. But that's just MHO.

Stache, good luck, but we need Haley back. Garf ain't gonne get toughness (I love how in the interview he points to Martin as "team toughness" when no one else hits - we need a s**tstirrer on this team and someone who can fight AND PLAY).

I'm more worried about Haley going than PAP. We can get a better winger for JT but we won't get a solid 4th liner who can mix things up who is under 38yo.

I wish Gillies good luck in the KHL, but what's with all of the Haley hate here? IMO I think he is one of the most underrated fighters I've seen in a while, and have never seen him flat out lose a fight. Yes, that Pittsburgh game was his most memorable but I think he is a quality fighter, and while he'll never be a goal scorer, at least has never been shown to be completely useless on offense (a la Gillies). I hope they bring Haley back considering it'd otherwise be Martin doing everything physical for the team, but this team being disappointing to me is nothing new...

I actually like Haley's game. Duane Sutteresque. For a fourth liner, he has the talent, but the toughness is key. I'd bet he could score 20 points in a year but be a hard SOB in a grind line to play against. I'd like to see Martin, Haley and Zenon on the same line but that ship has passed. Gimme a tough, young center who can play defensively and we have a fourth line to be proud of. (given Martin and hopefully Haley have the smarts to not instigate but cause penalties on the opposition)

I was pissed that it took all of last season for management to figure out that Haley should have been with the big club, it'll really suck if he goes. This team needs more toughness in the absolute worst way, Haley wasn't afraid of anybody and was good enough to play as well.

Remember when Phaeuf drilled Okposo in that exhibition game in Calgary? Haley was the ONLY one that did ANYTHING!

That was Martin who went after Phan, gionardo stepped in Marty dropped him, Martin bloodied Phan with a partial side check at home

In Nabby's exit interview I'm pretty sure he said what this team really needs to become is more uncomfortable to play against.

Glad he's being listened to. I mean imagine this lineup in the playoffs... They would get MAULED.
