Tiger flies one on the green, and promptly rolls off and then another 200 feet down a hill behind some trees

Andy North has it right, don't mind a hard course with fast greens, but if it comes down to one hole for the Championship, it shouldn't come down to garbage like that

Phil might make the cut after all. Bubba is probably screwed though.

Eldrick still at 1 under going into the weekend. Meanwhile, it looks like Lefty will manage to make the cut.

Eldrick is striking the ball really well. As long as he stays in the fairways he should be able to win this thing.

As for 17, I agree with Curtis Strange....the golfers know what that green is capable of. Its risk/reward US Open style, which is what I love about this tournament.

I would much rather see this style of play than the soft ass greens, hit the ball 15 feet past the hole, watch it spin back to 5 feet and tap in for birdie. This is much more exciting. Every shot is different.

Last time Tiger was in the position after 2 rounds at a major, he blew it against Y.E. Yang. Much stiffer competition with a gaggle of major winners right up there with him. I doubt anyone is going to move up the leaderboard that much, it's just a matter of if the group at 1 under falls back, and if so how much.

Hossler is only three shots back.

This tournament is still wide-open. Twenty players within four shots.

Els is in at +2

Furyk to -1

I think at the end of the day, if you're worse than +4, you're out.

Last amateur to finish in the top 10 was Jim Simons in 1971 (not sure if this is an answer but it's the best I could find).

I'm only referring to the US Open but I wouldn't be surprised if amateurs have finished pretty high at other majors. US Open courses are just extremely difficult even for pros so it's expected amateurs rarely do well.

If we're talking just majors in general, Chris Wood was T-5 as the low amateur at the 2008 Open Championship
