Brandon Saad

...the last time we were discussing him it was in the thread about whether he would make the playoffs...so I hope it's okay I started a new one rather than bumping the old one.

Reading the various posts about him in the new year roster thread and others, there seems to be disagreement about whether he can make the team next year.

Having seen him in the O, I like his size and the fact that he shows physical commitment. He didn't make an impact during his brief playoff stint, but I didn't think he looked horrible. I'd like to see him at the beginning of the season...but if he can keep up, I'd be happy to see kept around.

I dont think there is too many people saying he wont make the team next year, the differences seem to what line he plays on.

For me you play Saad in the top 6 for the first 15-20 games, if he cant hack it then drop him down to the AHL because he is not going to be a bottom 6 player with his skillset.

This kid has the skill and offense that would compliment our top 6 very nicely, his size and grit are welcome as well. I think he makes it out of camp on the top 2 lines because Bowman loves him, and Q really has no choice unless we acquire a Parise or something like that.

I was under the impression that the general consensus was that he was going to make the team next season....

He is most likely your second or third line left winger. I have high hopes for him. He could develop into a lethal scoring threat for us in future years. I think his impact on the team next year could be a big boost. If he has a good center and winger on his line, most people will be happy he's up. With two adequate teammates on his line, he will shine if he gets to play a full slate. I'm keeping my eye on him.

I think so, too...but in the next year roster thread there were posts that didn't include him and some comments to the effect he shouldn't be on the team yet.

in my opinion he's our best prospect, so i thought he deserved a separate thread...that's all.

I just don't want the spot handed to him. If Beach or somebody else earns it over him, I don't want Saad given the spot anyway.

He has a good chance to make the team, but it's naive to assume he has a spot locked up. He may appear more talented or more ready, but there's other guys who are more seasoned and will be busting their rear ends trying to take that spot away from Saad.

It's up to him and how he performs early on...

He will get a chance early on... I think whether or not he sticks is totally up to him. We have a lot of forwards trying to snatch 12 slots. I think some competition will be good though.

The Blackhawks roster is already full with contracts. Barring any trade which I cant see happening or injury to a current rostered player which would be temporary, my guess is Saad will start in Rockford. Shame b/c I believe his game is complete. Doesnt mean he'll be like some #1 overall pick however from what I've seen, he can easily fit in the top 6 right now.

Until some existing contracts are moved, I'd say the Blackhawks will play him in Rockford.

If he performs in training camp/preseason like he did last year, they won't be able to keep him down. Furthermore, the obvious move to fill #2C is putting Sharp there, opening up a left wing spot for Saad.

Brunette's top 6 spot is wide open for the taking. Even without moving any of Frolik, Bickell or Stalberg, there's a spot up for grabs for any of Saad, Morin, Beach, Hayes or whoever.

I saw alot of Saad this year and he is, without doubt, the most complete prospect Chicago has.. at least, as far as wingers go. He has the size and strength to compete in the NHL, he's a very good skater for someone his size and he has an NHL shot. I think there will be some growing pains as far as him getting used to making decisions faster and dealing with stronger, more experienced competition (as there is with all prospects) but I think, even if he's not scoring, he'll be able to contribute in a other ways and that's why he'll make the team over someone like Kyle Beach or Jeremy Morin.

With some PP time and a decent amount of time in the top-6, I could see him potting 15-20 goals and 40ish points next year.

Considering our top six graced the likes of brunette, carcillo, and Stalberg for most of the year, Saad shouldn't be too much worse

Sharp-Toews-Kane
Saad-Kruger-Hossa
Stalberg-Bolland-Shaw
Carcillo-Mayers-Jayes/Bickell
Bollig

I worry that this team does not make the playoffs.

If he makes the team I hope he earned it instead of just being thrown in there.

Why would you be concerned that he would make the team without proving it?

Last season he had an insane camp and MADE the Hawks keep him up because he was dynamite. He looked okay here and was sent down. Absolutely destroyed the OHL (best ppg in the OHL) and then got called up to the Hawks and looked like he fit in the playoffs and was scratched for Q's "veteran" bums.

Kid's a player and I would love to see something like this...

Saad-Toews-Hossa (insane along the boards, all 3 are great positional players)
Hayes-Sharp-Kane (Balanced line with a set up man, board man and sniper)
Stalberg-Bolland-Shaw (Responsible, gritty, and will allow Stalberg to use his speed against slower d men)
Carcillo-xxxx-Mayers (Sign a FO winning machine and that's a tough ass line)

No point really in having Hayes up if he is just gonne play on 4th line ,, Would be best to just have him play in Rockford then rot on 4th line

For that exact reasons that you mentioned. If he's ready, fine. OHL is not the NHL. He did nothing in the playoffs that gave me an indication he was ready. A year in Rockford might be good for him.

Only guy that proved he's worth anything in the NHL so far is Shaw. He also got sent down for a little bit.

Beach needs to get some time or he needs to be traded at this point.

What? Maybe I'm not understanding your point but the guy has done nothing but prove he belongs in the last year and now he's suddenly going to loaf? Not likely.

He played solid, positional hockey was good on the boards, looked better as he got more time and was responsible in both ends. He doesn't play a flashy game so it's hard to understand just how good his game is if you're not paying close attention to him on the ice. He has truly elite positioning, a skill that often goes unnoticed.

Beach is coming off a bad hsoulder injury, I'd like to see him put in a longer stint in Rockford in the way he was playing to start the year last year. IF he does that then give him a call up and see how he plays. He shouldn't be traded because at this point his value is highest to us, we woudln't get a good return on him.
