Aucoin and Roszival IMO are not as good hockey players as Martin, but they are both tougher, bigger and RH which matters for the pairings.

Any Phoenix-fan can relate to Michalek's strengths, but you also know that he isn't very physical, nor brings much offense individually. Having been paired with Martin who is less physical and despite his skating brings only slightly more offense, they have made each other appear much less than what they ought to be, because their skills and weaknesses are virtually identical. So now people tend to think both of them busts, whereas the biggest culprits are in our (Penguins) coaching/management staff, for not considering what we needed, and what those players need to be successful.

Jovo-Michalek on the other hand back... Jovo brought the shot, occasional nasty and generally the physicality, whereas Michalek made the pairing defensively solid by doing all the little things, reading plays, nullifying rushes, sacrificing the body, making quick effective outlets etc. Those two made a pairing better than the sum of its parts. That should always be the goal, IMO.

Maybe Martin could get to this with Rundblad.... but it would seem to me that Rundblad is still a ways away, and it would be an expensive third pairing for Phoenix of all teams.
Certainly an expensive one, and I'm inclined to agree on many of your points. I haven't really seen Rundblad play but from what I have read is that he is a strong offensive talent that isn't afraid to play physically, his big problem is he lacks defensive ability. I figure with Martin, he can help manage those defensive flaws, still provide a minor offensive upside, and let Rundblad flourish offensively while learning how to play a stronger defensive game. Again, I'm not saying hes a perfect fit, nor a cheap one, but certainly on paper he looks to me as a good fit when it comes to play styles and finding someone to partner him with. Other than Martin, the best options for Phoenix are Salvador and Allen it seems and I see Martin as the best of the bunch. We just need 1 solid #5 guy and our blue line is set, Martins only down side seems to be his contract which leads me to believe we could get him relatively cheap so that the pens can shed that salary. Again, his contract isn't unmanageable for the coyotes either considering who they are losing and a cap floor they need to hit.

I guess Martin has been regressing for "YEARS?"

Regressing does not equal to one season, a season that was not up to par for his standards, but not enough to wash away his value to that of a washed up has-been.

The Martin low balling/undervaluing is hilarious.

Speculation by well-connected Edmonton media that the Oilers may take on a less than pleasant cap hit to improve their D, then talked about the Penguins.

What would the Penguins realistically want from the Oilers for Martin? Probably going to hear about MPS and other top prospects but I don't see why the Oilers would trade Tom Gilbert during the season just to send prospects out the door to acquire a higher paid version of Tom Gilbert in Martin (not overly physical, decent skater, good passer).

Could Michalek or Niskanen also be on the move?

[Penguins fans] "Martin sucks! We want to get rid of this bum"
[Other fans] "Give you a low pick for him!"
[Penguins fans] "Anything less than a 1st is insulting"

The contradictory is obnoxious. Martin is in the completely wrong system, but even then, he's not THAT good. I'd gladly take a low pick, and let Despres take his spot full time.

I am with you here. Not terribly insulted by 3rd round picks for Martin, but more so by the stupid low pick offers that get made for Michalek in every other Martin thread.

Shero just said that they are trading some D-men & they are getting offers. If Martin's one of them who knows.

What would it take to get Niskanen's RFA rights?

An early 2nd or a good prospect, if Pens move Martin then he's unlikely to be available.

Martin was good for us in the reg season but he's too soft for the playoffs and he creates zero offense, I think Pen's fans can see that the devils "system" wasn't holding his offense game back lol

I don't think either are.

We could do a deal around Hemsky and Omark for Martin and Bortuzzo.

Pretty bland but could make some sense for both teams.

Good question...I actually don't have an answer to that.

I guess no would be the correct answer. Gonch had a heck of a bounce back season last year and I'm pretty scared that Martin might have a case of the 'sucks'.

Urgh, I'd really rather have the 3rd and cap space than Hemsky.

From the overpaid soft players angle I guess it's not too out of whack though.

would be a good offer, Puempel was well liked on the Pens board during the build up to the 2011 draft.

His lack of physicality & offense are his biggest weaknesses for sure. He is still a very strong skater with good puck possession skills, has a an active stick that deflects a lot of shots, & could put up around 30 points.

Not worth 5 million but still a good player. If he was kept of the open market he would probably being getting paid 4-3 million.

I know I was disappointed when we didn't take him or Saad, like the pick we made now, but thought we should have went forward with the 23rd pick.

Niskanen's rights for Puempel, is that the deal?

No way you get Hemsky for Martin plus we just traded our Paul Martin to Minnesota and I don't think he's what the Oil are looking for.

No idea what you read into it, but I said I did not want Hemsky loud and clear, right? So no worries.
