Totally. The diving in the MLS is not nearly as blatant as European/Latin American leagues though.
I don't watch a lot of MLS, but that makes sense. Having watched a fair share of Euro League and World Cup soccer and having played against players from many different countries, I've noticed that American players don't dive nearly as much as those from other parts of the world (*cough* Italy *cough*). Not being a racist or xenophobe, just going off of past experience.
I have played soccer my whole life and played for my college as well, and I agree that diving is probably more prevalent in soccer that other sports, although basketball is making a serious push for the top spot (Yes I'm looking at you Dirk). However I disagree that it has gotten to the point where I can barely watch it anymore.
I am actually of the belief that we are currently watching some of the best soccer in the history of the sport. The current Spain squad has a serious argument for being the GOAT, and I'm pretty sure that Champions League final between Bayern and Chelsea is one of the top 5 ever if not the greatest. (I would say Liverpool vs AC, but I'm an AC fan )
Anyway, I think we both agree that diving really has no place in sports. I wish someone could come up with a way to eradicate it, but I just don't know how you can do it. These guys make so much money that fines won't work, and penalizing them too harshly in game doesn't appeal to me either. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I agree something needs to be done to stop the diving trend.
I hardly ever watch basketball anymore, but from what I hear it's making its way up the diving ranks.
I did watch a lot of this year's Euro Cup, and I agree with you 100% about Spain. Their ability to control possession for what seemed like 80-90% of the games was incredible, and it reminded me why I love the sport. We'll agree to disagree on the unwatchability factor, as the amount of diving has definitely turned me off of the sport in recent years, particularly the World Cup.
As for solving the problem, I think eliminating the continuous clock would go a long way. Embelishment will always be a part of any sport that calls fouls or penalties, but the other more pathetic part, where a player rolls around on the ground and the trainers coming out to treat a fake injury, could potentially be eliminated if it didn't take time off the clock.
They are the two best position players on the A's, but not in the league or the mlb. Not even close.
I would gladly give both of them up for Mike Trout.
I wouldn't trade either one of them for Mike Trout. Reddick is a leader on this team and Cespedes is primed to become one of the very best players in the league very soon. His attitude is my only concern, but the 5 other tools are legit.
