Question: Contacting a team

No, I'm not trying to send fan mail. And I'm looking for a way to distinguish it from fan mail so it doesn't get tossed aside.

To make a long story short, I am working on my masters in statistics and I spend an awful lot of time on work in statistics with hockey (on my own time). I have built a portfolio of sorts over the last 12-18 months and I have been fine tuning it over time. It deals with player evaluations, team evaluations, disecting different "mainstream" statistics, etc.

I'd like to send this portfolio out to a few teams to see if it garners any kind of interest at all. I don't expect it to garner interest or really get me anywhere, but I atleast want to get it in the hands of the right people. I have done a fair bit of research to find who might be the best people to contact. I don't want to reach too high where it will be dismissed before making it to that person, and I don't want to reach too low to get a person who has no idea what it's relevance would even be and it gets discarded.

Who do you feel would be the best people to reach out to to mail this to?

With the Sabres, Graham Beamish is their hockey analyst and I intend on sending it to him. Most other teams do not have anybody by that title, or anything close. There are assistant GM's, assistants to the GM, pro scouting directors, hockey consultants, player development personnel, etc.

I know this is a stretch but does anybody have any ideas for me?

Thanks in advance!

We know Big Daddy reads almost everything sent to him. I'm sure if you prefaced it with your disclaimer about not wanting it tossed aside like fan mail, maybe Black can guide you?

As far as other teams.... No idea. If you know how to contact Beamish directly, that's not a bad start either. Care to share some of your work with us? I'm sure we will be able to tell you right away if it's immaterial or worthy of trying to get it in the right hands.

yeah try to get it to Ted or the PR guy Kevin Snow, he can probably help you out.

or if it`s useful for Minor league teams, go that route, they`d probably be a lot easier to get to the higher ups.

Thanks a lot for the responses guys. Never really thought of Big Daddy but that's a good point.

I'll just post some links of stuff I've posted to my blog. Not at all finished products, same general info but I've fine tuned some of the charts, taken out un-necessary wording and re-worded other parts to make it more professional. Then formatted it all a little better and converted it to PDF. But this will maybe give you an idea of what kind of material I've been working on.

Using player usage charts to take a look into role shifts from last season to this season.

Statistically based season wrap-ups for forwards, defensemen, and goalies.

Using stats to examine Sabres player contracts and who earned their money.

Taking a look at league wide goalie-independent standings.

Evaluating different win expectation models.

Looking at Fenwick ratings in different phases of the game, league-wide.

Looking into PDO and why it's so important.

Evaluating performance based on recent Fenwick/Corsi ratings from back in February.

Looking at how much the teams performance was really effected by Miller.

OZQoC charts from January

How high shot rates effect production.

Keep in mind, these are essentially rough drafts. Not all are Sabres related but most are.

As much as I like you making those public, make sure it's clear they're all your work.
