Looks like New Zealand will qualify from Oceana, they are really a one trick pony with Shane Smeltz but could pose a good 50-50 matchup to the 4th place team.

I think the US will qualify, question is how bad will we be spanked if we get a game against Mexico. And what USMNT will show up, the one that beats a USL pro level side by only 2-1 at the last minute, or the one that hangs in with France, Italy, Mexico, and spanked Scotland?

The Red Bulls need to blow up the team and start from scratch. Embarrassing.

They should keep Barklage and Lade considering their age, usefulness, price, and lack of need for an international slot.

But there will be an agenda change so we never know. Two guys who I wonder about are MLS all star defenders Conde and Pearce who didn't exactly sparkle for this team. Holgersson was awesome though.

Cooper- This one is a little tougher. He scored 18 goals this year, but how many of those goals came against playoff teams. Some crazy number like 16 of his 18 goals came against non playoff teams. He's a great poacher, but I question his ability as a big game player.

Cahill- If he wants to stay, why not? He's a steady center midfielder.

Lindpere- Getting old, wouldn't be upset to see him leave or stay either way.

McCarty- He's better than Dane Richards who was absolutely maddening to watch, but same with Lindpere, I wouldn't be upset to see him leave or traded.

Pearce- Really don't like him. He underperformed big time. Either move him back to center back or get rid of him. He's a dreadful sideline defender, he was getting beaten by quicker wings on a regular basis.

Holgersson- Solid center back, but has feet of stone. Keep him I guess.

Meara- No brainer, keeper of the future.
Comments in the box. As long as Marquez gets the hell off this team, I'll be ok.

With cooper, I don't really care who he scored against. Points from Toronto are worth the same as points from San Jose

I think they'll keep Robles as the starter, Gaudette as the backup, and sell/trade Meara.

The MLS needs to rid itself of this playoff nonsense, the champion demonstrates itself through consistency over the course of the entire season. It allows for an undeserved team to claim something it should not.

Not the American way. The Supporter's shield will only be relevant for CCL berth and about as important as the president's trophy.

MLS wants competition, playoff excitement, parity. Not "Which one of these 2-4 teams with all the fans and money will win the title this year." Its tiresome.

Failure to conform with the rest of the world is what will keep the MLS on par with the championship (at very best) indefinitely.

The true reason behind things being the way they are in the US is because of geography and low club density per unit area.

To add to that, there is nowhere near the level of rabid fandom for soccer here in the states as there is in Europe. The vast majority of teams in Europe have huge amount of supporters, even though they are perennially ending mid table.

Such a system wouldn't work here, there isn't nearly enough interest where fans of the lower teams would show unwavering support.

No one here wants a league where two clubs boss everything. No one wants a system where players in the same league aspire to one day become good enough to make the bench on... another team in the same league.

I know I don't need to list the teams because every European league had between 2 and 5. The rest in consolation.

I'd rather have a championship level league with parity than a premiership level league where a clubs legitimate goal is to make 7th place every year.

Not to assemble the best teams of other club's developed players money can buy, and pit them against other countries best assembled teams money can buy.

Come now, the lack of parity is more evident in north america. Each of the "big 4" leagues has its perennial bottom feeders with no incentive to improve. They embarrass their leagues with their regular presence. We all know who they are, The Royals in MLB, The CBJ, The Jags in the NFL etc etc.

Let's not act like money doesn't buy success. The franchise model does make it easier for the occasional surprise team to have a good season or two, but those are just aberrations. It happens in Europe too, Blackburn in 95, Montpelier last season, Wolfsburg in 09 etc etc. So there's no iron wall that keeps someone from winning the title.

This is a little OT but the video made me laugh so I thought I'd share.

Been watching more soccer lately and I enjoy listening to British commentators. A soccer game just seems more important when I hear a game called with someone with an English accent.

The video is a simulation of a basketball game between the Dream Team and the 2012 US Olympic team but it is thr commentary that makes the video.

Enjoy!

British ≠ English

It's a funny vid though haha. You're right American soccer commentators suck.

This is just a common byproduct of the emphasis of certain parts of history that we learn in America.

American commentators in general aren't as good ( I think a lot of it has to do with knowledge of the sport being infused in English culture) but I think a lot of people just don't like our accents.

Yeah I understand they are not the same thing but to my mind and many others of us here in the states the two descriptions produce the same sounding voice.
