You often need one team to qualify for a world cup and another to compete in it. We're talking about a sprint vs a marathon.

If you take the momentum team USA has now and transposed it to the team in 10 months they could very well make it deep. Otherwise I don't think this squad has the pure skill in it's spine (CBs, CDM, CAM, CF, ST) to make it to the semis or even out of a group of death without tremendous momentum and form.

Unlike the Euros and Champions league you can have a few average teams go on a good run beating up on poorer clubs. The World Cup can sometimes be a crapshoot.

Just two players, and I think neither actually played in one of the tourneys. So they were on the roster for five but played in four.

If Gigi Buffon plays in 2014 I believe it will be his 5th.

If the KHL became the top league in the world, I wouldn't follow it. I watch NCAA hockey all the time, and don't turn my nose up at it because it isn't the best developmental league (although it will be very, very soon,) I have that personal attachment because I grew up watching it and was lucky enough to play in it.

It's about your experiences with a club and league. Not about which has the very best players. That attitude is a consequence of the popularity of the top north american sports, not the other way around.

The MLS, no matter how quick it grows, will not come near football within ten years.

And do you really think Dempsey was going to get any playing time on the Spurs this year? Of course he had a problem with the manager. They went out and bought every player possible. He became an afterthought. He's been regarded as one of, if not the best US player over the past bunch of years.

It's not easy for a "star" player to take a backseat.
Mostly, apart from your original Dempsey point - I believe that $$ and the WC next year were also major motivating factors

It's just a weak generation. The one previous was strong. Hopefully the next one will be too. Scotland just needs to force athletic people to have kids to strengthen the gene pool

In the midst of NYR and NYG struggles, the New York Red Bulls are one game away from winning their first major trophy, the Supporter's Shield (MLS equivalent of the President's trophy) This means that they would qualify for Conacacaf Champions League next season. This is especially important with new competition; New York City FC coming into the league in 2014.

The stadium of 25,000 is sold out for tomorrow, but they could always use your television ratings. MSG network at 5:00 (obviously Jets fans have a game at this time)

Playoffs are not a proper means by which to determine a league champion. The Supporter's Shield winner is the MLS champion. But America loves its artificial tournaments.

We are going to have this fight every year without fail.

North America is too big to have 3 good teams that fight for the title every year, have all the fans and the money. No one in Toronto wants to be a fan of Indianapolis because they have all the money and talent. It's too far away.

So we have salary caps, and playoffs, to try to make things more competitive.

Now, if you want, you can consider RBNY league champions, and consider MLS cup like an end-of-season league cup competition where only half the league qualifies. Doesn't matter to me. But Supporter's Shield still means a lot more in soccer than the President's trophy does in hockey, because it qualifies the winner for CONCACAF champions league.
