Henrik Zetterberg to Toronto

I've heard that Hank had an underwhelming year with the Wings and some fans have soured on him, so perhaps Detroit would be willing to move him. Toronto could use a top centre and with Lidstrom's retirement, Gardiner could be groomed to be Detroit's next top defenceman (or at least a good #2/3).

TOR:
Henrik Zetterberg

DET:
Jake Gardiner
Nazem Kadri
Nikolai Kulemin or Tyler Bozak
Toronto's 2nd-round pick in 2012 (34th overall)

Too much? Too little?

He went on a tear towards the end of last year, and he's our next captain. I don't even know where I would start with trade negotiations because Zetterberg has a weird price tag.

I...don't think Detroit would be looking to trade Zetterburg.

You have old news. He had a great year after he stepped up. He also was the 2nd best forward after Malkin at World Championships with different wingers that was great to see. He's not going anywhere.

He also has some Captain duties for the becoming years.

As others mentioned, I highly doubt Detroit would be looking to move him.

Agreed - don't think Burke would want to give up what would be required to get Zetty. He's a great player, getting a bit "old" (using that term loosely), but offers so much more in regards to Leadership and soon to be captaincy.

So basically your deal is

A good defensive prospect with top 4 potential
A prospect whose value has dropped dramatically, who now projects to be a 2/3 liner
A third line winger (Leaving Bozak out because nobody wants Bozak)
A 2nd rounder

for

Zetterberg

The value is not even close to being there. If Zetterberg were moved, do you honestly think no other team could beat that offer?

Was just coming here to say there's no way Detroit would unload him.

We need someone younger. That price does not make sense for us at all.

This is just...I don't even....

Leafs are not trading youth for 30+ year olds. By the time the Leafs are ready to compete Zetterberg will be passed his prime.

Here's a fun exercise:

If you were the team with Zetterberg, would you make this trade?

Any combination of anything toronto has could be of need enough to pry Zetterberg from detroit.

Jake Gardiner = already have Brendan Smith,
Nazem Kadri = Not impressed with anything about him
Nikolai Kulemin or Tyler Bozak = see Kadri for thoughts on Bozak
Toronto's 2nd-round pick in 2012 (34th overall) = only 3rd-7th rounders are of use in detroit!!!

Nikolai Kulemin is the only piece of value to detroit. But not that much!

OP's proposal wasn't great, especially given the circumstances (i.e. Zetterberg being Detroit's next captain), but your evaluation of these prospects/players was far worse.

What makes you think that is the case? Just because he isn't fresh out of the draft (and automatic minus points for being a Leaf).

Exactly. No one except for posters on HFBoards are projecting him to be a 3rd liner. He has 60-70 point potential in the NHL (I.e. Ribeiro lite - worse offensively, slightly more "intangibles"). I think a lot of people will be surprised when he puts up 40ish points in the NHL next season.

There are still such things as Untouchables in the NHL, and Henrik Zetterberg is among them.

If Detroit is unable to sign one of Parise or Suter, yes, I would consider it.

Lidstrom and Holstrom are gone, Datsyuk will be shortly, and Zetterberg and Frazen have about 3 - 5 prime years left. It is Detroit we're talking about here, but the bottom has to fall out eventually. They've been a very good team for about 20 years, it has to turn over at some point.

With Gardiner, Kadri and Kulimen you are getting three good (potentially very good to great) young pieces to insert into a new core of players (Smith, Kindl, Nyqvist, etc.) to move forward with.

As a Toronto fan, I don't make this trade because I want these players to stay as our young core continues to develop.

Would love to have Zetterberg in TO, but no way Detroit lets him go. He is far to important to Detroit, and as most posters have said he will be the next captain.

In their defense though, this has been said the last couple offseasons. Kadri has been one of the major Leaf poster boys, and hasnt lived up to it (yet).

I agree with you though, Kadri still has top 6 potential and anyone who doesnt believe it is kidding themselves.

This would make Detroit look like an entirely different team next year.

Not sure it's time for more drastic changes so soon after losing Lidstrom and Stuart.

Even if Detroit were willing to trade a Zetterberg(or Datsyuk)....Toronto isn't a sensible destination. Nice cheese board, though.
