In Jim Matheson's Hockey World for Sunday:

Thoughts? (My thoughts are, simply, no thanks.)

He needs a sign that says,"Will sit on the bench for food."

If he makes the team out of camp, sure.

Something tells me that'd be a tall order for an enforcer who has sat out the last couple of seasons... or at the very least hasn't played professional hockey for that same amount of time.

I've got a soft spot for Laraque. I'm in favor of giving him a chance, we need the toughness and he loves the Oilers and Edmonton. As long as he can skate, I don't see the big problem. Let Hordichuk walk and sign Georges!

I know it's likely not a smart move, I'm biased.

I doubt he can take a regular shift in the NHL even as enforcer now. I guess it would not hurt giving him a pro try out for camp.

For what? So he can fight by the code? Not protect anyone?
Get the f*&k out of here with this idea.

I'd much rather have Hordi, and I'm not even sure I want him back. Despite what Laraque says, I can see him getting upset should he not get playing time or dress often enough. He was barely an NHL player when he left; I can't see that changing after three years away from hockey.

No thank you. Laraques was unbelievably frustrating as an enforcer. Our boys would get abused on the ice and Laraques would...be invisible. At best he would go and talk to their enforcer.

In order to truly "protect the kids" you need an enforcer that has that crazy gene where he suddenly snaps on a guys who is running around or mouthing off. Forget the size difference. As an example, take a look at McIntyre down in the AHL when he snapped and attacked their goalie TWICE after tossing around a player and referee.

Laraques is an excellent fighter but too respectful. Not enough crazy town there.

Lol. BG back in E-Town, good one. Definition of sucky. Great guy, washed up hockey player. Hope he has his money saved up as well as some good investments. Career is past done.

I'd definitely take Smac back before Laraque. No better fighter than big George but he's way too nice to be an NHL enforcer. Smac is too nice as well... but he has shown that he'll occasionally go at players if he gets riled up enough.

Not really sure the Oilers are interested in a true heavyweight goon though... I think a Hordi or Eager level tough guy is what they are going for... a guy who can still play the game at some level beyond just being a tough guy.

Now the coach they bring in just has to have the propensity to unleash those tough guys more often when the Oilers are being taken advantage of which is something that really hasn't happened on the team for many years.

Did he run out of money?
If he wants to play hes gotta be alot more aggressive than hes been in the past.

I don't think MacIntyre was that nice. He just played for coaches that wouldn't let him get stupid(which is sometimes necessary as an enforcer) so he decided he'd rather be a nice guy in the NHL than a tough guy in the AHL. Can't say I blame him. Like you said though. We need to bring in a coach that will give the tough guys a longer leash.

Detroit has been saying that their powerplay is their enforcer for years. We had a great powerplay this season and I still felt better when Hordichuk was on the bench. If your team is good enough, you can afford to have that player taking up a spot. The kids should be double shifted more often anyways.

As for Laraque. I like him a lot but he hasn't been overly effective since the early 2000's. He was scary when he was trying to make a name for himself and fighting everyone but once he got the heavyweight title he seemed to go soft.

I'd bring him into camp as a walk-on tryout. If he shows he can skate at a reasonable level, I'd consider giving him a league minimum, 1 year deal as an extra forward.

What frustrated me about laraque is whenever he would fight it was only if the other guy wanted to, and nobody really wanted to fight him..if someones running your teammates you better do something about it..
That was one thing Penner did do..Smid also does it
I'm not necessary talking fighting..just having a physical presence..scare the opposition Laraque was a huge teddy bear

Oh hell no! He never knew his role and never liked his role admitted on Stauffers radio show he hates fighting and tries to avoid it. Give me Hordichuk (he loves his role, likes fighting and he can skate and get there fast enough to make hits) over Big George any day.

Also just as a player we had George in his prime physically just as a hockey player and he is way past his prime now, way too slow and ineffective.

George is a fantastic guy, give him a PR job in the organization and have him run all the charity stuff. Otherwise no thank you as a player.

We didn't want him when he was an active player, why would we want him now? Fighters who don't want to fight have no use in the NHL unless they can do something else. As much as I like Georges as a person, he has nothing other than his fighting ability going for him. There are probably 50 better options out there, including career AHL fighters.

Penner?? Now that is stretching things a wee bit. No to Laraque, he is even more conflicted about his role than in his first stint.

Fighting the other team's tough guy every 10th game is not protecting your star players. Pass.
