I was just about to merge this with the other thread thinking someone had posted the Kelly signing twice, then saw the $1.6 million tag and thought they'd gotten Kelly for a heckuva deal. Guess I should sticky this, though.
We just saw David Jones get 4 million, Matt Cullen has a 3.5 cap hit (when the cap was lower)
Never underestimate the stupidity/insanity of a GM on July 1st with a whack of cap space to fill.
I don't know if comparing him to Jones and Cullen is necessarily accurate. I mean, Jones is a top 6 winger who has scored 25+ goals in a season and Cullen (when signed) was supposed to be a good 2nd line center, even though he's been slightly disappointing the last few years. However, I do understand how you are comparing the overpayments. Personally, I don't know if he would have gotten $2.5M but definitely $2M on the open market.
Needless to say, this is a good re-signing for the Bruins. He's worth about that so it's a good deal. One of the better 4th line centers in the League and another center I wanted the Sabres to try for off the market. Options are limiting even more for teams looking for bottom 6 centers now.
As a Bruins fan I am very happy with the deal, of course assuming there is not some really cumbersome NTC for 3 years.
He might have been able to get a few hundred thousand more on the open market, but this seems like where he should be. I knwo some fans were hoping it would be closer to 1.25, but that seemed unrealistically low.
