Looks like Newport has informed teams they're out

‪#CBJ‬ officially out of contention for D Justin Schultz. Not a shocker. Expressed interest w agent, but not granted face-to-face meeting.

Columbus asked about Schultz. Who wants to play there? 26 teams inquired about Schultz.

Kulfan doesn't know what he is talking about. Read his columns and he is lost.

The Wings like veteran D. You can say the same thing about VAN.

Considering the way Howson is dealing with Nash, can you really blame him?

McKenzie tweeted this earlier

Quote:
The UFA defenceman and his agents will over the next two days meet in Toronto with a small group of teams he has on his shortlist

5 teams on the shortlist

The process of fielding offers and meeting with teams was supposed to begin today but it was pushed back.

Code of silence.

This is more exciting than the Nash sweepstakes.

So you have to think Nucks, Leafs, Oilers, Rangers are 4 of the teams? Wonder who the 5th team could be?

Watching paint dry is more exciting than the Nash sweepstakes. At least we know the paint will eventuallly dry.

Hawks. Maybe Flyers instead of Leafs as well.

“He (Meehan) informed me today we are not one of the teams on his list he wants to sign with,'' Holland said.

Almost every team in the NHL was pursuing the highly skilled right-handed shooting defenseman from Wisconsin.

The Red Wings made their pitch earlier this week. They were prepared assure him of a roster spot at the start of the season, which is what any team that pursues him must do.

“He became officially free on Monday,'' Holland said. “We expressed to his agents we have interest in signing him. Don Meehan expressed to me that he would go through the process.''

Holland added, “I don't know if we were ever in it.''

Ansar Khan wrote earlier the roster spot was Schultz's to lose.

I gotta be honest, the way this kid is running this is rubbing me the wrong way. Assuring him a roster spot is stupid, IMO. He earns the spot or he doesnt play. Simple

Exactly, if he gets shipped to the AHL, is he going to run home and cry?

Honestly, the only 2 places that make any sense to me are Toronto and New York. Bias aside. He'll be guaranteed a spot in Toronto immediately and will be playing in Canada. On the other hand he'll be competing for a job in NY but be playing for a cup contender and a coach who can turn mediocre defensemen into Norris candidates while playing with friends who have succeeded in the same system.

Toronto is a nice city to live in, New York is 2nd to none.

Vancouver, while ideal for him emotionally, will not offer him the best opportunities, to play immediately or succeed for the long term. Rangers have a young core, Vancouver is aging.

Edmonton has no guarantee of ever succeeding. That's a huge risk, and in a very unappealing city to live in for years. Also, he'll have to sacrifice the travel schedule to play for either Edmonton or Vancouver. It's a reason why Nash doesn't want to go to a far out west team.

Detroit is already out. The chances of him cracking the lineup in Philly is slim. The only other possible team I can see him interested in is Chicago who will give him as equal of an opportunity as the Rangers will.

After analyzing all of this, watch him sign with the Penguins for all I know.

Agreed, I'm very uncomfortable putting him into a guaranteed roster spot. Especially with his underdeveloped size.

Would be funny if Edmonton snagged him, considering he was drafted by the Ducks with a compensation pick (from Edmonton) after the Oilers offer sheeted Penner.

Really? Doesn't bug me at all. It's not like he's gone all LeBron and set up a TV program. Nor has he dragged it out - it's only 3 days since he has officially been an UFA and he's already reduced the list to those with whom he'd realistically sign. Renting an apartment in NYC takes longer.

He's simply doing his due diligence and making an informed decision; it's the (Canadian) media that's turned this into a circus.

The "assured roster spot" rule, if you will, is what bothers me. The media too, but theyre supposed to be a bother.

No one knows if he's being assured a roster spot. It's only been speculated.

Read on SNYRangersBlog that Vancouver and Edmonton are waiting in Toronto for the chance to talk contract with him.

The article which quoted Holland said that offering a roster spot is a "must". Isnt worded in a speculative manner.

Exactly. All he can hope for is a chance to compete for a spot - it's not like they can put it in the contract. Once he signs, he's on an ELC and if he ***** the bed, down he goes.

Now, he can ask teams to make presentations and during those presentations to lay out how realistic a chance he has to make the team - and again, I don't begrudge him that. He paid his dues under the rules and he's exercising his rights. (Having said that, they should close this loophole in the coming CBA negotiations.)
