I think he's weighing the best practical opportunity (team situation & earning potential) with the NYR vs. being close to home (which I would imagine would be way more important than being across a specific border) with VAN vs. being "the guy" on defense with RNH, Hall, etc. on EDM. I see TOR involved simply because it's always a good idea to have them in a bidding war and as for OTT... I can't be certain, but they do present an intriguing hockey opportunity and I'm guessing he likes the style they play.
(Actually, to be fair to Toronto, they also probably present the best opportunity for endorsement earnings.)

I was saying Vancouver or Edmonton before, but New York seems more logical than the Oilers. If he does sign with either of are teams it'll show he values winning more than ice-time which is a good sign.

It's OK if he signs with Vancouver. I don't want a guy that chooses a team and a work environment because it puts him closer to Mommy and Daddy.

I don't know the guys situation but that would be a red flag for me.

He is a highly sought after NHL prospect about to sign a big money deal now.

He was a kid playing in the BCHL then.

While I do not disagree with the sentiment. I do not believe for anything that his meeting Messier would have any bearing on his decision on which team to sign with.

Meeting Messier is bound to happen when he's a pro. It's not like he will never see him again.

mark messier is one of maybe 4 or 5 guys that are truely icons of the sport. gretzky messier howe picks ups the phone and calls you you are honored you don't go well this guy was on another team when i was growing up rooting for the canucks so screw him. do you know how stupid that sounds???
You do realize that Messier was captain of the Canucks for 3 years, in which he alienated most of the teams players and the majority of the fan base by having their longtime captain and fan favorite traded away, wearing a retired number and by leading them from a team that made the playoffs 6 years in a row to a team that missed the playoffs every year he was there? Ask a Canucks fan what they think of Messier.

Anyway the Brodeur comment was tongue in cheek but regardless, if I were being recruited by a NJ firm and they had Brodeur to greet me that would IN NO WAY make me consider taking their offer any more than everything else involved would. Regardless of how "cool" it would be. And I am just a hockey fan, not a player who is surrounded by hockey players and NHL legends most of my life.

I am not sure why ANY of this is complicated to understand.

He is bound to meet EVERYONE when he is a pro, if he hasn't already. Between camps and his management team he has probably met tons already. Bobby Orr probably personally sat down with him and pitched him Orr Hockey Group agency for representation.

These guys aren't 10 year old hockey fans...

Haha, I love all these twitter reports of teams making a pitch and getting "denied" and "dismissed."

This is how I picture Schultz right now:

I wonder if this is going to be a trend with Newport clients. This "come and present yourself" thing happened with Richards as well. I bet they have a throne set up and everything.

What you all fail to realize is the reason for him to meet Messier is not purely the wow factor of meeting an HHOFer with 5 rings. It's just the fact that Mess has played in all three cities and knows them well. He can really talk to the experience of playing in each city and why, in his mind, New York is head and shoulders above the others (at least for him).

I heard some stories of the '94 team after they won the cup, and I wouldn't be too surprised if that weren't far from the truth.

Lol if they wanted to pitch that angle they should have really brought in the big guns, Murdoch, Greshner, Duguay and Espo....... Game over.

I've heard some stories from people who have met or dealt with Messier, and I don't mean random fan encounters. Most of these people say that Messier is a giant tool.
