I think many of us are forgetting that the cap keeps going up, so player salaries are just going to go up with them. You add $6M to the cap ceiling in one summer, that's (theoretically) an extra $180 million to be thrown at UFAs and RFAs.

What's theoretically the maximum that this can be front loaded btw? Can they give him say $5.5 + $5.5 M for the first two yrs and then $1 M in the 3rd? Just wondering because I know he's not above 35 and I don't think the deal takes him past that age either.
I think that's a bit of a stretch. Might be a bit high but 2 mil for a reliable veteran guy like that? Come on...
Let's face it the cap is 70M as it stands right now. Relative to that, it's not that bad for UFA money.
I don't know man, for me I've seen a lot of Kelly and loves what he brings to a hockey team, but I don't think he's worth a cent over 2.5. I mean he's great defensively, a hard worker, and he's a really good team guy, but he's not very good at hockey when it comes to playing in any area of the rink except his own end.
I don't pay more than 2.5 for a defensive specialist and third line player. He put up some nice numbers this year, but we all know he is nothing close to an offensive talent.
The cap did not go up by 60% over the last two years.
It doesn't have to in order to be the cause of this. The top players will continue making about the same. Nobody's giving a $9m Cap hit to anyone at this point. The Cap hit is the determining factor, not the actual salary. It's the mid range players who receive the raises when the Cap goes up. So take the part of that 60% that would go to the highest earners if it was all spread evenly and reallocate it to the midrange guys, and that's why you're seeing the price for those kinds of UFAs skyrocket.
Edit: the point still stands, but $3m looks a lot better than $4m.
Seems like people aren't realizing that prices are going up across the board. Small overpayment? Sure, when you compare the players, I'd rather Grabovski or Hemsky at 5.5 than Kelly at 3, but its not as ridiculous as some make it sound. If he only got 2 million, it would have been a steal.
