A lot of changes and moves will have to be made, and I don't think Burke has the cap space, assets and enough suckers in the other 29 front offices to take advantage of, to make the appropriate moves needed, to make this a playoff team next year.
It's still to early to tell though but I'm an optimist and as Kevin Garnett said. "ANYTHINGS POSSIIBBBBBBLLLEEE!!"
-Getting rid of selfish players like Kadri.
-most of the SLACK gang have to go
-veteran leadership in the defensive end
-Phaneuf to play on the 2nd pairing
-forwards who can score and be defensively responsible (one of Lupul or Kessel must go)
-Deschamps and Holzer to the big club
Even with an overhaul of the roster, the players would still have to learn each others styles while on the ice and adapt to a Carlyle's system. Most of these players were used to Wilson's system and so it will take at least half a year to get the old/newer players to get Carlyle's system to where it can be executed without many mistakes.
For that reason alone, the Leafs would be very hard pressed to make the playoffs next year. The proof was in years past where the Leafs "upgraded" the roster by signing free agents, making trades like Versteeg that never panned out for the Leafs. Having solid goaltending will still be tough to fix the defensive mistakes in an 82 game season.
Considering we don't have a clue how deep the cuts will be, and what changes Burkes group makes, this poll is pretty pointless.
We don't know who our goalie is. With all the emphasis placed on the need for a game stealer between the pipes, how can we prognosticate with any sort of a clue?
We don't know how the second line will rebound, or if it will even be intact come training camp. Is Kuley going to be able to park last season's debacle and return to form, or was his previous season a one off?
Will Liles rebound after a head injury? Does Gardiner suffer a sophomore slump? Will Kadri be a Leaf? Does Frattin solidify himself as a regular?
Do we draft a game ready Calder contender or a project player?
Too many unanswered questions at this point. No offence to the OP, but why are we asking these questions now?
