The Jordan Staal Speculation Thread - One More Time
Oh, absolutely. All the rumors are are just that - rumors. I'm sure Shero is at least open to discussion to see how outrageous of a deal he could possibly get IF he cannot sign Staal long-term. Every GM should be looking at every option for their team at this point. It's part of their job.
I'm sure Shero wants to re-sign him but just in case talks don't go exactly how he planned, he has an escape route to get maximum value. Or he could play his cards right and just hold Staal until the guy leaves on his own. He gets maximum value of playing him all season long.
This could be a fair value, probably an overpayment from the Canes, but it would really piss me off as a Canes fan. Faulk is the most exciting young defenseman the Canes have had, ever. With how notoriously bad the Canes have been defensively for years that would be a tough pill to swallow.

I just feel like this whole thing with the Hurricanes was started because Bob Mckenzie had a little bit of speculation and then everyone just started going crazy over it. The idea was to get a winger for Eric Staal this off season anyways. Obviously Jordan Staal is wanted by everybody, but the priority is still a winger IMO.
I like Giordano a lot, but I'd rather have the Carolina offer if there's a shred of truth to it. Backlund isn't all that helpful for us because we can't really provide him a scoring role at the center position.
Smart move for the Pens is holding onto Staal and making another run at the cup (IMO). IF they can't sign him next offseason they move his rights at or before the draft.
Smart move for the Canes is not getting bent over on this trade, signing a high end winger this offseason, and keeping Jussi at center for one more season.

backlund's defensive game is great. he'd fit in well at taking over the 3rd line c job in pitt

Actually, I'd say Backlund is an ideal 3rd line centre on most teams right now. He has shown flashes of great skill, but the reason that he has stuck in the NHL so far is his consistent defensive play. Solid bottom six center addition that may turn into a top 6point producer if he continues to gain confidence (and stay healthy).

I see, I think maybe a little bit more info on Backlund would be helpful for those that don't know (apprently myself included) about his defensive game and really his game in general in terms of progression. In special teams situations, you don't hear Backlund's name out there (at least on the PK), why would you say that is? Just that guys ahead of him can do better? Or just that Backlund is still young and the coaches didn't want to subject him to the PKing so much so quickly?
Inevitably, I feel, Calgary is heading towards at least a re-tooling, if not a complete rebuild...correct me if I'm wrong...is Backlund not considered part of the solution there? Or are you just prepared to give to get because Staal is a better solution?
Rob Rossi from the trib reported this deal was being discussed:
Staal
Martin
for
Sutter
Faulk
8th overall
EDIT: whoops, didnt know it was mentioned in the last thread.
Hm... this deal would be quite tempting for the Pens
Basically, Martin holds very little to no value as his output simply does not justify the cap space that he is currently taking up. Getting rid of his contract would be a huge bonus by itself.
On top of that, Sutter, Faulk and the 8th overall will most likely all be very promising prospects which will keep the Pens' window open even longer (not like it's not already long enough as it is). Therefore, if this deal is on the table during the draft and Ray Shero is informed that Staal will not be signing an extension with the team, Shero may very well take this deal. Remember, the draft is being held in Pittsburgh this year, so adding a top #10 draft pick would be very exciting for the fans!

its a great deal, yes. But you're terribly misinformed about Martin. He does not have negative value. If you gather all your info on players from HF boards then yes, it looks like he's a giant albatross but in reality that is not the case.

Seeing that it is from Rossi, I will not hold my breath! I think I would include the 22nd pick to get it done. But like I said doubt there is any truth to it.
I would be willing to give up a huge package for Jordan Staal to the Islanders. He is EXACTLY what we need in the 2 C spot.
Islanders:
4th overall
36th overall
Frans Neilson
Brock Nelson
Calvin Deehan
God that's a lot..
I may have to rethink that. What do Pens fans think? Frans Neilson is a tremendous shut down C. Brock Nelson is going to be a stud at the NHL level in your 2 C spot. Calvin Deehan is absolutely going to be a top 3 defenseman in the NHL as soon as next year if given the chance. The 4th overall.. well.... there's another huge player.

He played sheltered minutes, but when he's on the PK, he looks quite good. Finally at the start of training camp this past season he put on muscle and looked ready to breakout as preseason started. Unfortunatly he had a freak finger injury and missed a big chunk of the start of the season. He had another injury down the streatch and played very little last year, he really never got into a groove. At this point, Backlund has shown to be a servicable 3rd line defensive center, who still contains offensive upside.
A full out rebuild will not happen, at least that is what management is saying.
Feaster is trying to find players in that young age group 24-27, that are just hitting their prime and can contribute now (which is hard to get in any trade scenario because of value). We really need help from a top 6 centre who is good at both ends of the ice.
I hate to move Giordano, but with the number of FA dmen, this might be the best year to do it if Feaster feels he can draw from some of that talent in FA.
