IIRC he moved to Australia when he was like 1 or something. Been playing in Czech youth leagues for the last 5 years, Australian league too crappy to get attention haha

Sucks that our Swede drafting is flushing in the Red Wings fans.

They'll probably have to bring him over on a barge if he signs.

Not to mention the treacherous overland donkey-pull to Vladivostok.

It's hard to believe that a year ago he was ranked in the top 10.

5 defensemen, 1 C, 1 LW, and a goalie

Who is the center target going to be? Jokinen?

Well, people were complaining about the number of defensemen in our pipeline. Of course, four of the five defensemen were our last four choices, so I don't hold out a lot of hope for seeing many of them at the Honda Center.

A lot of our draftees are off to college in the fall. I guess that the Schultz fiasco didn't bother the Ducks in terms of future players. The good news about lower picks going to college is that we keep them in the system longer and they have longer to develop, so we can see if they are late bloomers.

Overall I like the first two choices and the picks in the fourth round. After all, everyone needs to pick a midget, and a fourth round pick is just about right for the wee little ones. Further, this one may have some talent. He can always be considered a small version of Sexton. The fourth round defensemen may have at least AHL potential and could surprise us. I have no opinion about the last three picks as they are so far off the radar that I know nothing. I am concerned that the third round pick, the Goalie, is a wasted pick given his apparent attitude about it being the NHL or nothing.

Like this draft for you guys.

Two of my sleeper picks were Roy and Cooper. Megna was a nice surprise last year while I am surprised he was drafted I can see him being a #6/7 Dman if all goes well.

Roy and Cooper are beautiful picks.

Nice snag getting Helgesen in the last round. Didn't play much in the first half of the season for the Hitmen, actually played more at forward than D just because of the depth the Hitmen had on the blueline. But he eventually made his way into the line-up and was a mainstay in the 2nd half of the year. Impressed me with his four-way mobility and poise with the puck on his stick. Pretty raw, but good upside.

So, seems like you guys had an eventful draft weekend. I came back roughly four hours ago and since watched the first round and read through all the relevant threads. Not going to lie, the development of the reactions to the Lindholm pick was rather funny. Given his late rise and his generally still lower projection, I was surprised, as well, and didn't know a ton about him. All things sound really great, though. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he is going to do. Seems like a year of SEL hockey would be a logical fit, but who knows what he's going to look like at camp. I really like him at this point - as most seem to after a while - and I liked how Madden specifically addressed their thought process regarding trading down as not being an option here.

Kerdiles was often mentioned as a guy for our 2nd pick, and seems like a good fit talent-wise, apart from being a local-kid. The Danish goaltender seems really interesting, as well. Haven't seen anyhting, but those are impressive numbers for the SEL. Him not wanting to sign with Carolina isn't very nice, but I would not worry too much. If he intends to take his career to NA he can't really wait until we lose his rights, as well.

With the other kids, there seems to be an interesting mix between skilled and big guys.

Something I noticed that might be interesting. The Ducks drafted 8 players total. Of those 8 players, 4 were not first-time eligibles. Obviously there's Andersen, but Roy, O'Brien, and Megna were all guys who were eligible and passed over last year. And it's interesting to note that 2/3 of those are college guys (Roy, Megna), although Cooper and Kerdiles are college guys drafted at 18.

Now some people were wondering if the Schultz situation might affect the Ducks draft strategy. From a first view, the fact that half of the draftees are NCAA bound might suggest that there was no change. But the fact that two are 19 year olds might suggest yes. As 19 year olds, the Ducks should now get rights until they (are supposed to) graduate. Even if they leave early, four years takes them to what would have been the senior year. This might be a bit of a stretch, though, considering that they still got Cooper and Kerdiles, and that early pick Kerdiles is probably the only one that is developed enough for this to be an issue.

Anyways the older drafting thing could also be interesting for another reason. Maybe it means the Ducks are more interested competing soon?

Side discussion on Andersen. I originally thought it was a bit of a waste of a pick since he's almost 23 and thus should be UFA soon. But I think the same CBA "loophole" that might have made Schultz draft-eligible might also have made Andersen draft eligible. At 23 next season, he would traditionally be considered a UFA, but then again there's that "not drafted" clause that makes that section not apply. So other than that, he doesn't really qualify for UFA (and wouldn't really qualify ever as far as I can tell unless he's drafted again). So maybe the Ducks had to draft him. I believe this is the only real loophole involved in the Schultz situation, and this will probably be addressed somehow in the next CBA.
