Burrows & Edler

assuming, once Gillis has dealt with the immediate needs this summer, that both are priorities to get locked up before UFA next summer, and assuming neither gets traded, what does Gillis extend them for?

can we hope to get Burrows at/under 4x$4M?
or Edler at/under 4x$5.5M?

or does Gillis wait until next summer to deal w these guys?

Gillis will wait to see what the new CBA looks like before he makes any attempt to re-sign these guys. That being said I wouldn't be suprised if he'll get them signed quickly after that happens (depending on when the CBA is resolved).

I think Edler is a lock to be re-signed regardless of what the new CBA looks like but I have this feeling that Burrows won't be. I see him being traded. He will be 32 next April and I just don't see Gillis signing a 32yr old undersized forward to a $4+M deal. I have no issues with Burrows at all but this is just a feeling I have.

Burrows is such a versatile, smart player - I'm not sure why you guys don't think he'll be here.

I think he'll be resigned for 4M, maybe for 3 years. He's part of the heart and soul of this team.

Burrows should retire as a Canuck.

Anything less and I'll be extremely disappointed.

Give him the Chris Kelly extension ASAP.

I agree with what you say about his heart and versatility. He is still going to be 32 next april making him 33 in the first year of his next deal. History has shown us that guys his size and the style of game he plays start to break down at this age. Like I said, I have no issues with him at all but I don't think it's a slam dunk re-signing like you seem to believe.

Why would people think this? Unless he's a centerpiece in a deal to bring back a legit 1st line winger then why would we move him? The guy provides 30 goals per year for only 2mil, we won't find a better bargain than that via trade or UFA. If anything I think Burrows will leave as a UFA next offseason, I really don't see him being traded.

Just a gut feeling on Burrows.

I don't think Gillis shares most of our opinions on just exactly when and where our window is. An asset like Burrows could help go a long way in getting "faster and younger".

I'm not saying I want to see this happen; just that I can see it happening.

It will be at least double that this time time next year. Currently the most underpaid player in the league not on a ELC, it will probably be Burrows last chance to hit a home run and pad his nest egg for the rest of his life.

Only once has Burrows scored 30 goals in his career. I am a Burrows fan just like the rest but lets not go off the deep end and start calling him a 30 goal scorer just because he wears a Canucks jersey.

Another great point. He clearly took a paycut with the last deal because he wanted to stay. That isn't going to happen this time around. Burrows is probably going to price himself right out of Vancouver anyway so it really doesn't matter what any of our opinions are.

What a crappy way to treat a player who has done nothing but good things for this franchise. Good luck trying to attract or retain players with this sort of attitude.

I think he'll be resigned, guess we'll see on July 1st.

major pr nightmare if GMMG doesn't resign Burr.

Especially considering he has shown he is one of the best with the Sedins.

...actually I wonder if anyone has Trent Klatt's number?

I wouldn't necessarily look at it that way. I don't think Gillis would trade Burrows without first having discussions with him about the future and his expectation$ going forward. I'm sure he'll attempt to re-sign him first.

Every single team is guilty of this and ever player is guilty of greed. Vancouver is a winning organization with top notch facilities. Vancouver will not have any problems attracting players now or in the future. Players go where the money is and where they can win.

If David Jones got $16/4 yrs, Burrows will get a lot more than $4m per.

Oh, and so Edler doesn't get hurt feelings getting left out here, if Gillis thinks he can land Weber he's going to be very reluctant to throw too much too soon at him. (Edler)

Burrows has scored at a 30.3goals/82 game season over the last 4 years.

Burrows is loyal, he'll sign a fair deal.

If he isn't extended that is when I'll start questioning the current management group.

I think you're right, sadly.

Burrows is one of those heart and soul kinda players who should be here, but Gillis will get rid of him, complain about some of his stupid penalties, and then fans will turn on him.

Many teams are waiting for the new CBA and that could make for an interesting off season for teams signing their own players. For me there is a war coming and it could get ugly

Gillis has a history of letting contracts run out before renegotiating. I'll be surprised if either of these guys gets re-signed before this time next year.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone about what Burrows brings to the table. That doesn't make him a 30 goal scorer. I go by end of the year results and he has only ever reached 30 goals once in his career and that was 3 years ago. Either way, I just don't see the Canucks giving him the type of money he's going to want in order to re-sign before hitting the open market.

... prepare to start questioning the management group.

I would like to see Burrows retire a Canuck.

How about a 10 yr $27M contract paying

6 5 4 3 3 2 1 1 1 1

It will reward him for his sacrifice to date, which will command a lot of respect for Gillis and the Canucks by other players on how they treat him, and will give him the bulk of the money when he is still playing upper level hockey. A cap hit of $2.7 / yr is not bad at all.
