Red Wings to make decision on Holmstrom in July

http://www.freep.com/article/2012061...omas-holmstrom

Helene St. James reports, among other things, that:

Quote:
Holmstrom told the Free Press on Monday that he spoke to general manager Ken Holland and "they're going to decide (in the) beginning of July what's going to happen."

Holmstrom, 39, is mulling whether he wants to play another season, but this indicates that if the Wings want him, he'd be open to returning. His wife and kids want him to play; Holmstrom's concern is that he has a lot of hard mileage on his body after 15 seasons, especially his knees.
It sounds as though he wants to return, if KH and Co. will have him.

Good. I would welcome him back for another year.

I bet they'll sign him to a two-way and waive him if there's no space like they did with Maltby.

With as bad as his knees are, I wonder if it makes sense for him to just retire.

That said, I wouldn't mind it that much if he was back.

There are better options already on the roster/in the Wings system or available in the UFA market- time to let him go, Kenny.

This is the right decision. I'm not anti-Holmstrom at all, but it all depends on what happens at the draft and free-agency. If the free-agent market is terrible and the Wings can't get anyone, then see if Homer wants to give it another go...on the cheap, of course.

I hope we don't have to resort to re-signing Holmstrom, but I'm not going to cry about it if they do.

I love Homer. He has done a lot for our team. But we just don't have room for him anymore. Time to step aside and make room for the young bucks. That being said, I wouldn't make a fuss if we did re-sign him for another year.

If they can't find three or four better options on the free agent market, then god help us. Next season would be very long, and very cold.

Came to post this.

There's just no room for him. If they give Homer anything other than a Maltby deal then that means we struck out in FA and are basically screwed.

He's been done. His net-front presence gets us more penalties than goals anymore, he's as slow as molasses, and he's never been the greatest hitter/passer.

I'd rather see Homer retained if it meant Emmerton WILL NOT be the 4th line center. Not saying cut Cory loose, cause we know that ain't happening but I don't want to see him as anything but the 13th or 14th forward.

Just gotta finalize that Hudler contract, then re-signing Holmstrom is next up on the priority list

This.
I'm thinking Holmstrom will end up retiring like Draper & Osgood did last year.

This should calm some people that a Holmstrom decision is coming AFTER free agency starts.

Holmstrom shouldn't have been brought back two years ago.

Good of them to make a decision in July. I like Homer but I don't really want him back. His point production will drop again and he'll be next to useless next season. Plus, It isn't too good for him either. He takes so much punishment playing the way he does, I just don't want to see him get hurt.

I'll say it - cut Cory loose.

Dude doesn't bring anything special and he's hogging up a roster spot that could be filled by a much more useful player.

It'd be good for him too - he'd get picked up and get to go play 12 minutes a night somewhere. Win-win. Maybe they even get a conditional 2046 draft pick for him. Win-win-win.

Wrong.

Sammy and are after Hudler, THEN it's Homer. Then it's the return of Robert Lang.

Cory Emmerton will be out of the league in a year or two. He's a career minor leaguer who MAY get a few cups of coffee in the NHL before he's done playing.

Sad, in a way. After Lidstrom decided to hang them up, I figured Homer would as well. He's setting himself up for "the talk" from Kenny.
