Wasn't Chara the closest SJ got to signing an elite UFA in his prime? And that was because DW didn't want to give him the captaincy?

What? Chara wanted to sign here but didn't because he wouldn't get the "C?" That's why we don't have Chara??

Maybe not in his prime, but supposedly Scott Niedermeyer would have signed here but chose Anacrime because brother Rob was there.

Yes. He demanded the captaincy and DW told him that was up to the players and the coach I believe (rightfully).

We even offered more money.

Wow, thanks.

There is a pattern of offering more money and still not landing the big name:

I believe more money was offered to Niedermeyer. I know more money was offered to Gretzky. I'm guessing there are other elite UFA's who were offered more by us, but still went elsehwere.

UFA's not coming here "now" is less about the Sharks not being an attractive destination and more about what DW will and will not give. See Dan Boyle, Dany Heatey and others that have said they would waive to go to the Sharks. Yes, that's less than a true UFA, but I still believe the Sharks are better suited to land a UFA than in the past.

And did anybody else notice that Burns has a modified NTC? If so, I must have missed those posts.

I made this same exact point yesterday. Glad someone else said it too.

Ya I noticed it yesterday. I was honestly surprised he didn't have one at his salary.

Agreed. I suspect they just didn't post it until it became effective.

There is a lot of stuff that goes with elite UFAs. For the most part they don't garner cups in the subsequent season. A little better success in the second season and thereafter. All GMs should approach them as a long-term rather than a short-term plan.

Second issue is that they tend to sign with a limited number of teams on the east coast, plus Chicago and Detroit. Better than 2/3 of the teams in the league have the same or more difficult problems with elite UFAs. I call BS on it being hockey decisions for those players. It is more about the market and "hockey madness" which affects the players as much as the fans. There are a lot of cups won without signing elite UFAs in their prime.

that's a very dumb reason not to sign with a hockey team, IMO

that'd be kind of awkward to walk into a brand new locker room where you don't know anybody, and youv'e got the C because you demanded it from the GM and didn't earn it from EVERYONE (GM, coaches, and players)

I have thought about this. This would mean the Sharks would trade Boyle. Seems a little to risky for cautious Wilson and would lead to the biggest contract in Sharks history.

In order for this to be possible the 2 conditions would have to be met

1. Sharks are comfortable with Burns and MEV as top pairing

2. Sharks are comfortable with Demers/Braun and Stuart as second pairing

Top six would look like this

Pairise Thornton Pavelski (Ridiculous best overall line in the league)

Couture Marleau Havlat (Perhaps even more crazy best second line in the league)

Top four

Burns Vlasic
Demers/Braun Stuart

With that line up I don't think any other team would be better suited to win the Cup

I'm not gonna disagree with DW there. It worked out in Boston but just handing the captaincy to a guy who's never set foot in your lockerroom could easily blow up in your face.

Isn't Rick Nash a Right Wing? So our top line would be:

Zach Parise - Joe Thornton - Rick Nash

Three franchise forwards on a single line... oh god a boy can only dream.
