Depth is fun, but I'd still prefer the top end guy we can get at 7th over two at 11 and 16 at this point.

Rielly, seen him play live numerous times. He's worth the pick. ACL injury or not, he's worth the pick. Let him develop another year or two back in the WHL. We need an OFD, he's that OFD.

I'd say Trouba is very far away himself. Two years at Michigan, minimum in my estimation. Not out of the question he plays 4. Michigan typically doesn't bother with one and done type of prospects.

I'd view players like Rielly and Dumba to be well off in terms of NHL readiness as well just due to their shortcomings. However, seeing as how they'd be eligible to show at camp and given the Wild's lack of high end talent at the position, they could concievably push for a spot. Though, I'm not sure if you'd throw either of those guys with those sort of warts in their game into the fire like that...

Point being, it's likely that whoever the Wild select with this pick will be two years away. In my opinion anyway. Taking that into account and knowing what I'm told about Teuvo, he's my preference right now.

Trouba is still my first choice. Strong, physical, competitive, good skater, hard shot and the only weakness in his game seems to be questions about his offensive creativity. He's definitely going to be at least a couple years away but that just gives him time to refine his game.

I'm starting to warm up to Reilly. If his injury concerns are gone, he would be exactly what our prospect pool needs. If he can be the new Brent Burns of the future, then I don't think anyone can't get a little excited about the idea of him putting on a Wild sweater someday.

If Teuvo ends up being a sniper and not another playmaker, then I think I can get on board with him too. I still would not be surprised to see us take him with our pick.

Like TP is alluding to, almost anyone we would theoretically pick at 7 this year is going to be 2+ years away from the NHL. While some want to argue Trouba is physically ready, remember that no player in the history of the USHL has ever made the jump directly from USHL to the NHL. Even Erik Johnson, first overall pick, spent a year at Minnesota before making the jump to the NHL.

Rielly definitely needs another year of seasoning, especially after missing almost a whole season. Unfortunately for him, he's a March birthday so he'll be more like Bulmer and less like Phillips. He can't go to the AHL for 2 more years. I'd expect Teravainen to be like Granlund in terms of when he comes over, specific issues aside. Reinhart could physically make the jump immediately, but if a team wants to actually develop him, he's more of a 3-5 year project.

Of the players theoretically in the "top 10" at the moment who could reasonably fall to us, here's my guesses at timetable before they hit the NHL:

Dumba - Could surprise and be just a year out. Judging from his combine ht/wt he has fixed the biggest issue between him and the pro game by filling out almost completely.
Faksa - Closer than Teravainen. Being born 10 days late to be able to play in the AHL, a team with room on the 2nd line could possibly see him after 1 more season in Kitchener.
Ceci - One more year in Ottawa then 1-2 years in the AHL could have him ready. However, with how much he has to learn about playing in his own end, he could be a longer project than that. He has the benefit of being AHL eligible in '13-'14.

If we want to consider some players possible fallers:

Girgoenko - Needs to seriously fill out. He's 6'3" and 200lbs. He would probably be a longshot for an NHL spot as early as '12-'13 if he were fully filled out already. Since he's not, I'd say one more year in the Q optimistically.
Galchenyuk - A very longshot for the NHL in '12-'13. Optimistically ready after one more year in the OHL.
Murray - Could challenge for an NHL spot immediately. I'm unsure how exactly the "4 year rule" works in the CHL. If playoff games count, he could be AHL eligible already. A team not completely desperate for defense will likely give him a year in the W and at least a year in the AHL.

lawlz.

Just had a hockey conversation with my "connected" banker friend down in Chicago.

It is his belief that Patrick Kane is being traded draft day for a "legit star goaltender +". I asked which conference and his response was "east".

/shrug

Dude's been right 50% of the time when he tells me something, which is a helluvalot better than Eklund.

It's going to take more than a goalie to get Kane. You'd need to add a top-6 center, and possibly a young dman or big bodied 3rd liner.

Forget about Parise, Patty Kane is going home!

Definitely Trouba, smooth skater, safe defender and with time should improve his offensive upside.

That would make a lot of sense and also be a really stupid trade for Chicago.

Hence the + ?

This rumor probably has legs as that is also what the pundits are talking about Chicago doing.

With the addition of Oduya, Chicago may be set on D for next season.
Keith/Seabrook/Leddy/Hammer/Oduya/Montador. They'd probably try to sign a guy like Corvo to flesh things out so that they could sit a kid or Montador for a game or two.

Keith - Seabrook
Hammer - Oduya
Leddy - Montador/Corvo

I wasn't even thinking that it was Buffalo. I was thinking it would be Pittsburgh.

MAF +

For

Kane

Depends on who they get back. Miller + top-6 forward + a mid-round pick might be enough to entice Chicago.

Edit: Maybe Chicago's tired of Kane's drunken antics. I can't imagine why else they would want to trade him - he's an amazing player.

It makes a lot of sense because of the PR issues with Kane in Chicago, the need for a starting goalie, Kane being from Buffalo, the need for offense in Buffalo, etc.

What doesn't make sense is that I still think goaltending is overrated when compared to defensive systems, and that Chicago would need some good young talent coming back in addition to Miller. I mean, they already lost half their Cup team practically.

We would definitely have to add cheap, younger players. Probably one of Granlund/Coyle and one of Larsson/Bulmer. And take out Cullen.

They aren't going to take $11M in salary for a $6M player.

Why would Minnesota want Kane when 1.) Parise is about to hit FA, 2.) our prospects will be pushing for top-6 roster spots starting next season, and 3.) we should be focusing on defense (ala Suter)?

I don't know if you live in Minnesota but our cab drivers are out of control, we need someone who is tough on them to get them in order. Hockey player by night, twenty cent by day.

He would be a skill upgrade but I don't see wild wanting that as it requires talking to backs and it makes a hole for us in net and we don't have seabrook or Keith on our D.
