I'm confused though. Wasn't this Raymond's current deal also through arbitration? Or was it done just before? I'm pretty sure a club elected arbitration can happen only once with the same player.
Raymond signed his current deal minutes before he was due to have an arbitration hearing.

ah that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

IMO, I still expect him to be traded at some point. Getting him signed to a lower cap hit is the logical first step in terms of asset management.

This just gives the Canucks time,,they either move him or sign him.I hope he is not in the line up next season.

I believe the only time you can't trade a player is when he is signed to a offer sheet and the team matches it. That player can't be traded for a year after that. But arbitrations don't mean anything, and I hope and expect he will be traded during the summer aswell (whether it's before or after the arbitration).

Hey, I never said that I was particularly advocating Raymond being back. I think he's a redundant asset.

But I stuck to my guns in saying that he would not be allowed to walk for nothing.

Yeah. That seems to be the case. For some reason, i thought the rule regarding matched offer sheets applied to club elected salary arbitration as well. But it doesn't appear to.

For the next week until the draft is here. Thank god Luongo "rumors" aren't the newest thing out there now...

If Gillis is willing to embarrass a long-standing Canuck like this over a piddly $400k, I can only imagine what he would be willing to do if Luongo ixnays a good trade proposal with, say, Columbus.

Because it's very unorthodox and if approached wrong the whole relationship between player and management could crumble.

It was argued that maybe this wouldn't be a bad deal for Raymond to accept, as his value as a UFA is uncertain after a rough season.

My Canucks facebook feed had this picture of MayRay (sitting alone on a bench in a suit and tie).

And all I could picture was:

Not a big fan of Raymond. But he is still an asset. And you don't want to just give one away. He could be signed and then moved, either individually or as part of a package.

So if this is a move to keep Raymond so that we won't lose him for nothing, what sort of return are you expecting from him?

I like it, squeezes a bit more space into the cap and is a massive kick in the ass for MayRay to up his play, thereby raising his value, then at the trade deadline flip his ass for someone that will help bring the cup to Vancouver OR a couple picks to pad the future. Brilliant.

Honestly, I think if the Canucks could get a 4th round pick for him they would snatch it. Just my opinion though. Rumors were around last season that they tried hard to trade him and couldn't find anyone to take him. My guess is because he makes more then his numbers suggest he's worth the last cpl seasons and his past injury.

I like Raymond but I do feel his time has expired in Vancouver. Sometimes a player just needs to move on and I think he is a candidate for that. I don't see how he fits into the top 3 lines and he makes way too much for a 4th liner, regardless of his penalty abilities or not. There will be a handful of 4th PK plugs available come july 1 at a fraction of the cost.

You'd think Gilman had a hand in writing the last CBA the way he knows all the obscure'ish clauses and ways to massage the rules. I wonder if the NHL would like to get ahold of him to help write the new CBA.
