Just watch how much Jay McClement will get. Then you'll know the value for that type of player.
Although it's hard to tell as McClement had slightly higher level of linemates (as noted by how much better Slater did in WC), I think most GM's would McClement>Slater (in the roles they played; Slater has more offensive upside)...
Great news, what is this team without Jimmy Slater? really.
He will be our third line center without a doubt. Glass and Thorbs can't keep up with this guy. He's way faster, and is actually a good offensive player. How many beauty one timers have you seen him score?
I remember at the start of last season, everyone was playing terrible, even Pavs, Slater and Stuart were really the only solid guys at that point.
Give this guy some PP time. He won't let you down, he will work is ****ing ass off.
Interesting just heard Chevy on CTV news saying "we could have had the opprotunity to potentially trade Jim at the deadline last year and it was someone that we decided was too valuable at that time and we wanted to work hard at retaining him in the future"
Very happy we got this done.....thanks Jimmy and well done Chevy!

Wonder if it has anything to do with that Ottawa rumour...
It baffles me how people think Slater is not worth 1.6 Mil and the GST is our fourth line. I've heard Claude Noel mention at least twice that the GST line was a 3rd line in his post game interviews and how Antropov was on the 4th line when he was demoted.
All in all, it is a great signing. Could not be happier that he chose to stay on with the Jets.
How is this 500k too much? Which player in the current FA market can you get for 1.1 million that can play the same role as Slater?
I agree, i's totally not too much. Besides the fact he for sure would have gotten more elsewhere -- the guy left it all on the ice, bought in, worked hard, led by example, hit, blocked shots, played for his teammates, scored some beauties, saved our butts on crucial face-offs, dropped a few gloves, volunteered to take a big community role and overall did everything asked of him, all while being a total class act on and off the ice and really embracing the transition too.
We're not in any cap trouble, and you don't let a guy who did all that walk over what is really a pretty minor overall difference, especially since it's not like the contract is a risky one or anything. Slater was our most consistent forward and deserved a raise, $500k seems more than fair. This is a great deal and shows a lot of mutual respect between the organization and the player, which as others have said bodes very well.

I thought it was a bit much at first but now I'm quite happy with them paying that for the versatility that Slater brings. Of the Jets 4 regular centers last season, the face-off percentages were: Slater, 54.4%; Little, 49.6%; Burmistrov, 44.0%; Antropov, 43.4%; with Slater taking 25% of the teams draws - only Little took more. Amongst Jets forwards Slater was also first in short-handed time-on-ice per game, first in blocked shots, third in hits, sixth in shots and eighth in goal-scoring.

IMO, they were the defacto 3rd line. I think Slater has the chops to be 3rd line, but Thorburn and Glass don't. We really need a 3rd line that can produce and alleviate some of the shutdown pressure, so that S & T and ? on the 4th can do their job more effectively.
I will admit I was sceptical about resigning slater and glass.
That being said I think the value of Slater and contract he got was spot on. Sounds like Glass and the team have something in the works and could be finalized soon.
Hopefully this creates more team building and chemistry and we can have another playoff push with a re-energized and motivated GST line.
Great signing in Slater .... then Glass is 80-85 % (Full) done for next season.........when we sign Glass it will look like Welly, Fehr and Stapleton may have to look elsewhere......Welly and Stapleton played well last year but we cannot sign all our UFAS........ we need some turn over to try and get bigger and better.
Great deal. I'm stoked. I thought it would take more than $1.6. Considering all he does for our team, I'm quite shocked at how low his PIMs were at the end of the season. This guy makes our bottom 6.
But he's gotta be our 3rd line guy next year. Cormier, Glass, & Thor on 4th. Slater / Machachek would be a good 1-2 punch on 3rd and I think we need a physical guy with a bit more skill to play with them. Mittens could cycle in and out depending on injuries, but we need a W who still has an aggressive mindset to get in on the body to fill out this 3rd line.
Or if you slot in Klingberg for Thorburn, that appears like a good energy, defensively responsible line that hits and has a scoring touch. Not sure how far Kling is from the NHL though.
Great to see we got him re-signed! Every team needs a Jim Slater imo. He has taken massive strides in his game over the past few seasons and I believe he will get even better in the years to come.

There are definitely not enough Jim Slaters and Mark Stuarts to go around. Cap friendly role players who are great leaders imo
