Heatley... wha? No.

Compensation be damned, I just want a signed captain without an absurd contract.

He's not a playmaker... I really would think his numbers dip is attributed to who's around him in Minny. In San Jose he scored 82 pts and I think 70 something.

I will say the line of Healty-Spezza-Alfredsson was one of the best lines to ever watch play the game.

If you're really all about money you should sign with Florida, Tampa, Nashville, or Dallas, the 4 NHL teams without income tax.

New Jersey's 8.97% income tax has you making $628,000 less per year on a $7M contract.

Assuming an 8 year term at $7M per year, that's over $5M dollars total, BUT assuming a realistic 5% annual return on that "lost" money, you're really talking about a substantial $15.6M less over the 8 year period.

Also factor in the percentage that the agents get. Players (although I don't feel bad for them) get somewhat of a considerable chunk taken out of the number we see.

Why we should take this Nick Palmieri kid. Heard he has some promise and a pretty good nickname as well. Need to look it up.

So there are numbers floating around now, eh?

This affects the Devils in two ways:

A. What they can offer as "competitive"

B. What Parise (agent) asks for as "comparison"

And it has nothing to do with him actually signing with Minnesota or not. It is (artificially) inflating his demands when he and his agent should be in the dark on this for two more weeks.

It's pretty bush league (and obvious) at this point. The Devils should not have to worry about a single thing *leaking* out when they have his rights until July 1st. It directly affects negotiations now and that's absurd.

No, I don't believe so, but you don't want to cry wolf without a good reason, you know?

I agree, if other teams start throwing the Monopoly money around, bow out and let him decide if he wants to win or sell out.

That's not the way tampering compensation works. We got picks from the Blues because of the tampering, not Stevens. Stevens was the RFA compensation for them signing Shanahan. And nowadays, even that would be handled under the offer sheet rule, not through compensation made up of roster players.

We can't just steal their prospects because they tampered with Parise.

I still find it absurd that the Wild and anybody else will throw around these type numbers assuming the Cap will be at 70.3 million. The split and the way the Cap is caculated is going to change.Nobody knows where the cap will be. You are not going to see the increase the way you have over the past 7 years and if the CND$ ever weakens it will bring the cap down even more.

The Wild don't have the money to pay Parise 8-9m a year for a long term contract. The simple fact is that Kovalchuk was not offered that type of money by ANY team in the league. No team will now suddenly have that type of money to throw around.

Kovy wasn't offered that kind of money because most teams were capped out in the summer he went UFA. The cap is going up by a lot this summer, and more teams have the required amount of space.

Many teams had the cap space to sign Kovy, and it could have been cleared by trades if they wanted him. That is not the reason.

The Wild are going to throw something crazy at Parise, like $8-$9M, and pay Heatley $7.5M? Go ahead.

Agreed. Let's see the Minnesota brass pay Crosby-money to Parise. I can't wait to hear them try to justify his 25 goals and 60 points after he spends a season adjusting to new line mates and a defense-first system.

With the way the US printing presses have been running 24/7 spitting out $USD for the last 3 years, I'd be more worried about our currency crapping the bed.

Kovalchuk had a very small list of teams he wanted to go to and a even smaller amount of teams were willing to go to 100m for him. Going back two summers ago the only 4 teams that I can remember being talked about were NJ,LA,NYI and STL.

I do think Kovy was seeking $100 million from the start (from ABA, anyone but Atlanta) and there was still a stigma against him of being a great individual player who can't mesh with a winning team. I'm not sure Zach has a target figure per se, but his agents might be thinking nine figures after the Wild's surreptitious comments and he has no stigma attached to him.

Let them throw crazy money around. Every year one of the perennial loser teams try that. Last year the Islanders threw huge money at Erhoff. Ultimately free agents like Zach want to play where they have a chance to win long term.
