Paul Gaustad in on July 1st

I was hoping the Canucks might be able to pick him up as a centre option, especially if Kesler is going to be hurt to start the season again.

He's just coming off a 4 year deal at 2.3 mil cap hit.

Thoughts?

If he wants 3 million like he did with Nashville, Vancouver may be better off trying to get through Kesler's injury.

According to my TSN app, Kes is only supposed to miss the first 4-6wks of the season.

He left Buffalo with 0 career playoff goals. Got his first with Nash, but kind of seemed invisible the majority of his time there. I guess he was still hurt or whatever, but it seems with him that the expectations of what he brings always outpace his actual contributions. He was always looked at as a big tough kid willing to do whatever it took to help his team win. But..... he's never actually accomplished that. As a Sabres fan, i wouldn't want him back. Kind of rubbed me the wrong way how all of a sudden in his contract year he's wearing a visor and letting Lucic run Miller.

Someone may pay him 3 mil a year but I dont think he is worth that. He does a lot of little things that can help a team win (faceoffs, physical) but he doesnt put up a lot of points. I see him as a 4th maybe 3rd line center at best. For the Pens I would take him as a 4th line center for like 1.25 mil to play 4th line but I'm sure someone will give him more

My offer for Gaustad from the Habs: $10M/4yrs. It's still a premium over what I think he's worth, but I think the Habs have lacked that kind of player in that role for a long time, and I'd pay a premium. Habs don't have a strong scoring group, so they need to get away from having such a mixed bag of players in the bottom-6 and start actually having some guys in defined lineup roles who can consistently take some shut-down pressure off Plekanec and play more in tough situations.

The really crazy thing is that's barely an increase on his last contract, and he probably will indeed get $3M or more.

I'd love to have him on the leafs if they are able to shed some salary.

2 year 5-5.5M would be the max I'd want to sign him for an I have a feeling he will be getting much more (and a longer term deal) with another team.

4 year 12-13M is what I think he'll get from someone...

I think he gets somewhere in the 3.5-4.5 range. More than I'd want to pay anyways. Although I'd like him under 3 million.

4.5 Mil for a guy who scores 10 goals a year is insane. I mean the Penguins just resigned Chris Kunitz last year for 3.7 a year and he had 26 goals. I know they play different possitions and Gaustad is a great faceoff guy but 3.5 to 4.5 for a fourth line (boarderline 3rd) player seems nuts to me.

I think Gaustad is a solid 3rd liners, not a 4th liner. But his production is not what you look at. He's a less skilled Hanzal type IMO.

His contract demands were part of why Regier traded him at the deadline. iirc, it was reported he wanted a raise to the tune of about 3.5-3.75. My guess is he'll get that kind of offer from a few teams and have his choice of where he wants to go, since a lot of the similar forwards that would've hit the FA pool have already re-signed.

I keep posting in the habs board, so I might as well post here that I think Gaustad will get 4 mill a year.

Gaustad doesn't get paid for his scoring ability. He gets paid for being a great shutdown center, PKer, and a top 10 faceoff guy.

Depending on who isn't brought back, I'd love to add Gaustad...

Anything under $3M please.

He has always played Malkin really well. I would think some Eastern Conference teams would be interested in over paying for that alone.

Yeah, I get that but I still dont think he's worth 4 mil a year. I would love him at 2 mil. I usually like a little more point production out of my 3rd line center though.

Never in Paul Gaustads career has anyone ever considered him a shut down center or a good penalty killer. Yeah he is great in the circle but that's it. I lost a ton of respect for his 'toughness' when he stood still like pedestrian while on ice during the lucic/miller incident.

He will get 3.5 or so but I hope it's not with the Sabres. Severely over paid for what he does.

Eastern teams might have a leg up since his family is still in Buffalo. Gotta keep the wife happy and all that...

And he's a good defensive player, but his lack of footspeed is telling in a checking assignment role. He can use his reach and his stick, the ability to initiate some contact, but he's not necessarily the vision of an eraser out there.

I'm pretty sure he started to wear one because of the whole Manny Malhotra thing, it seemed like a lot of players with that kind of a game (Defensive forward, good at faceoffs) started to use them, guys like Jarrett Stoll and Steve Ott wore visors.

As for his contract value, his cap hit was 2.3 last year, really don't see how he settles for much less than 3 this time around.

My prediction the Wash Caps and not is not a good thing nor something I think they should pursue. Caps fans will babble on about defense wins cups etc...until they realize they are paying Ward 3.5 and Gaustad 3.5 and have zero scoring come next playoffs.

Eh, the biggest problem with Goose in Buffalo was how Ruff misused him. Expecting Gaustad to be able to skate 17-18 minutes a game is just dumb. He was also relied on for way too big a portion of the team's grit.

I won't get into the Lucic thing other than to say there were 4 other guys out there with Gaustad who also did nothing.

I agree with you. If he wants a lengthy term slightly less. But on a 2 year deal I could see it.
