I suppose it's 3yrs instead of 4 because of this clause (from wikipedia):
For these players, the first NHL season is a season in which a player dresses for at least 11 NHL games.
The exemption period is then reduced to three years for forwards and defensemen and four years for goalies.
I guess they use years after signing the 1st contract, not seasons.
I could totally see Burke claiming Aulie off waivers if we send him down.
Might be better off keeping him in the NHL, and scratch who ever is playing the worst out of Mikkelson/Lee/MAB/Aulie.
