Two backups. Oh joy.

Those backups would be improvements over Emery and would force Crawford to have to play better to maintain his starting spot. Mostly Clemm, Hedberg is old.

Precisely. It's a lateral move.

No more backups, it's time for a starter.

give crawford ~20 games into the season to see if he can regain his form from 10-11. Still, would be nice if we could get another goalie capable of starting if crawford struggles again. That guy is clearly not emery.

And if he does struggle, the cost of acquiring one is that much more expensive.

But frankly even if he DOESN'T struggle in the first 20 games, it could so easily be another wasted season if he craps the bed again in the playoffs. I don't trust him as the starter regardless of what he does now and I don't want to waste another season.

Which begs the question: How good will a non-athletic goalie ever be playing in the best league in the world? Answer: Average at best. Stan needs to make a move now. Dam, with the good goaltenders going fast, I'm thinking even Luongo and his mind-numbing contract is a possibility at this point.

Hawks need to draft a big and athletic goalie this year with the hope that the trend continues.

Crawford, like Q, will get some time to prove their worth to our team. This year, Bowman would make a move. I think Backstrom can be had after december

Not an awesome enough Goaltending situation to where *possibly* signing a different old backup Goalie would improve our Goaltending situation?

What is this "nonathletic" term? Does it just mean a goalie that relies more on his positioning than his reflexes, because that loosely describes pretty much every goalie in the NHL.

Anyways, Ike hit the nail on the head. Crawford cannot and should not be trusted as a starter next season. Crawford at this point is a goalie insurance policy (read: backup). We have no legitimate NHL starting goaltender anywhere in this organization, and that currently stands as the biggest weakness of this roster.

Non athletic mean he can't move laterally well enough to not be out of position ever.

Yes every goalie wants to be in position, however many are able to make a save when out of position because of their athleticism. Crawford is not that goalie. Crawford went to a goalie school that was built for the early 90s when teams could clog up the middle and a goalie could merely rely on being big and in position to stop 95% of the pucks shot at him.

Today shooters know the butterfly, know how to beat it, and are allowed space in the middle of the ice because of the new rules. Crawford simply doesn't have the skill set to be successful in today's NHL.

He had a good rookie season because he was an unknown and teams weren't sure how to beat him. In the offseason they studied and learned his weakness and where he was vulnerable. However unlike some goalies and how they can maybe improve their weakness if it's technique or a weak glove hand, there is nothing Crawford can do at 28 to suddenly make himself more athletic.

Tim Thomas has agreed to waive his no-trade clause, IF he is traded by July 1st.

Personally, I'd rather stick with the crap we have than bring him, his ego, and $5M cap hit to our club.

I would love to see Tim Thomas here in Chicago... if he would actually play. I don't trust that this "year off" was just a stunt to force a trade.

Thomas would cover a lot of deficiencies in our line-up.

I'm sure we wouldn't trade for him without the promise he would be playing.

As I've said all along, no to that locker room cancer Thomas.
Coldsteel, there's no guarantees at all with that guy, that's the whole reason he would be traded.
Also, his style would cause him to get eaten alive behind our defense.
NO NO NO.

I'm not saying it's likely he'll play next year, but it's still possible...

I do agree with you with respect to the D. You'd absolutely have to follow up the move with signing Suter or Allen, someone that will clear the crease for him. It's not an ideal fit but I just want a solution. If it is bring Thomas in or stick with Crawford/Emery, why not give him a shot, can't be worse.

Thomas would be Emeryesque on the Hawks.

The only way I'd even consider it is if the B's took a salary dump like Frolik/Olesz and gave us a pick.

I'll believe that when I see it. Yes, he may go down to .915 in our system but I can't see him going all the way down to worst in the league.

He was already down to .920 this year in one of the most goalie friendly D's in the league. The Hawks are one of the least friendly goalie D's in the league. Thomas would be around .905 on the Hawks, at best.

There's no point in acquiring Thomas. IMO he waived his NTC as a courtesy to the Bruins, not as a sign that maybe maybe maybe he'll play next season.

If he doesn't play, he doesn't fix anything. Actually, he causes even more problems.

Obviously we'd have to know if it is just for cap floor purposes or that he would play here.
