The Habs have an opportunity to acquire talent and depth with their combined five second rounders in 2012 and 2013, not to mention their #3 overall in 2012 and #? in 2013. I don't see how they could acquire more picks in the first two round unless they traded Plekanec and/or traded down in the upcoming first round.
Incidentally, the Habs owe their abundance of early picks largely to the 'despised' Gauthier. I regret the departure of AKost but not Cammalleri or Gill, and it's possible to recapture AKost without sacrificing anyone else. I'd say they could get a third rounder for Kaberle and possibly even for Woe-ber but Bergevin should wait a while on those two.

No needs to "tank" (what a ****ing ugly dirty word..!!!).
There will be a lockout next season and the Habs gonna be part to that mega lottery like 7 years ago. With a bit of luck, we gonna get a high draft pick.
I don't think the Habs are bad enough off to do it without parting with key players. Last season was the perfect storm of injuries, front office chaos and coaching frustration. I'd be shocked to see the current/projected Habs squad looking that poor again for a whole season.
We won't get MacKinnon with this new management group and new direction. Although, I believe that the Montreal Canadiens under Michel Therrien should be better than last season but still it should be a work in progress. We do not have a great core to make it back into the playoffs like Philadelphia did back when they drafter JVR and made it to the playoffs the year after. But to end up with a top 10 pick next year would be insanely good for us: if they develop in a good way
Jonathan Drouin
Elias Lindholm
Pulock
Nichushkin (Moncton bound)
Curtis Lazar
If by mid-season, the Canadiens are struggling and the odds of making the playoffs are slim, I hope Bergevin doesn't make any desperate move like Gauthier did last winter. I'd hate to end up with more bad contracts or trade away young promising players for short-term help.
If it's not meant to happen next season, then just be patient and keep building slowly.
As Lyrical mentioned early on, I would hope they do not tank on purpose. However if it's clear they are not making it again, acquire as many picks as you can and stock up for the draft.

Like I said before, I think we are going to struggle this year due to lack of winger depth.
If we get Gally this year, to be able to add MacKinnon, Shinkaruk, Jones, Barkov or Drouin to that. Add in our 5 second round picks over that span. Our prospect pool will jump from bottom of the league to the top.
Agreed and a lack of toughness on defence,I believe the Habs will be at best top ten and move up for a lottery spot.
I'm cautiously waiting to see what Barkov's going to do this season. He had a great year this year. If he can improve his skating, then I'll be all for him.

The offseason has barely started and your already saying we wont make the playoffs next yr
Its pretty clear that we will have more than 400 man games missed this yr I guess cause thats why we didn't make a run last yr. NO healthy line up means ****** line combos ****** line combos means no chemistry no chemistry means no playoffs and a ton of frustration.
Its pathetic to see how little faith fans have in their team and new management. No wonder nobody ever wants to sign here holy ****

You realize we had man games lost in Gomez right? When we lost gionta the season was already over. We lost markov most of the year, which is why we acquired kaberle. No difference.
I'm not saying we're bound to be in the basement, but habs traded one of their best snipers in cammalleri(although his regular seasons weren't spectacular), traded their top 9 forward in kostitsyn and 3 players had a career year offensively. I mean, I expect Cole, Gionta, Kaberle to be on the decline of their careers, not upswing. It could really go either way. I'm not surprised if we finish 6th and I'm not surpised if we get a top 10 pick. It really depends how they plug in those holes and if they don't, if those holes(such as loss of gill and no shutdown d-man replacement) are smaller than we think they are.
Besides all this, crimson said "IF". I even capitalized it. IF doesn't mean you have no faith, it just means you're prepared for anything.
No. I think we should add some depth scoring, hope Markov avoids injury, hope Bourque and Gionta can rebound, replace Kaberle/Diaz/Weber with a better D man .. Finish first overall and win the ****ing cup.
I don't mind getting another top 5 pick by tanking, guys like Shinkaruk, Barkov, Jones, Mckinnon will be something to watch. I personally like Shinkaruk, 49 goals in the WHL this season.
