G Zachary Sawchenko - Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL (2016 undrafted)

Sawchenko was Canada's goaltender for the Ivan Hlinka this year and he's only 16, a 2016 draft eligible player born in December. He seems already to be the #1 goaltender for the 2016 draft, his stats don't look good from 13/14 but Moose Jaw didn't have a good season overall.

I like him, but I think it's too early for me to put him in any type of category. Just personal opinion, scouting-wise. I've liked other young goalies before like Justin Paulic, Payton Lee, Jordan Papirny etc, all of which went undrafted. Need to see how he follows up his performances from last season.

He's got all the tools and is being brought along slowly in Moose Jaw, which is probably a good thing.

Just pitched his first WHL shutout in a 30 save performance.

2nd in SV% in the WHL, #1 is held by Nick Schneider who has only played 4 games. Playing very well right now. That is impressive considering Moose Jaw is not having a good start with only 6 wins and 8 losses.

With him and Evan Fitzpatrick, 2016 looks strong for goalies.

He is a must have in Franchise Hockey Manager! A can't miss prospect in the game.
At least the developers got one thing right!

Watched him over the weekend. Struggled a bit early with some rebounds and stuff but seemed to get better as the game went on. Kid has a fantastic glove hand. Caught a few rockets and made it look easy. Just wish he was 6-2 instead of 6-0.

Bump as he's playing in the BMO Top Prospect Game tonight. Any idea where he goes in the draft?

Late 2nd/early 3rd. He SHOULD be the 2nd CHL goalie taken in the draft behind Hart. Though someone could understandably like Fitzpatick more. But Sawchenko is one of the fastest goalies in the draft, very aggressive on his challenging, explosive and loves to play the puck. Only Troy Timpano face more shots/game then Sawchenko. We're in for a treat tonight.

Thanks for the opinion! Apparently his dad is a poker buddy and I never even knew until tonight.

Going to a good, competitive program. Interesting to make this decision so early but it seems like he has a plan so I wish him the best.

Probley thought he didn't have a future in the NHL so might as well get started on education.

They probably would have given him a chance in the ECHL but going to a program like the University of Alberta will give him an education and he'll still be able to go to the pros later on either in NA or in Europe. It's the same thing with Chase Marchand.

True. To bad for Moose Jaw though. They probably wouldn't have minded keeping him as an OA.

Moose Jaw loses the most here for sure, either have him as a starter or trade him for a good haul. It's a shame that it appears not a single NHL team offered him an ELC when there's more than a few that could use a goalie like him in the depth chart.

Not sure I understand the upside of making the announcement unless he's just decided he's done pursuing a pro career. Like why not see if you get drafted?

He has to go through the draft again first, it's not like he could even field offers now if there were any.

Great program. It doesn't mean his career is over at all.

Can someone explain to me the benefit of him picking U. of Alberta over a NCAA program? Certainly some programs would've loved to have him.

In all fairness I don't know much about CIS, but it feels like NCAA is the better development route.

Once you play in the CHL (OHL, WHL, QMJHL) you are considered a pro and lose your eligibility to play in the NCAA. This is why you don't see anyone graduating from the CHL and moving on to the NCAA.
