Islanders Targeting Possible Defensemen via trade

Newsday's Arthur Staples, speculates about who might be moved draft weekend.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey...ason-1.3786615
Under GM Garth Snow, the Islanders have refused to deal picks and/or young players for established NHLers. This year is no different, although Snow is trying hard to land a defenseman to shore up a thin mix. Only Mark Streit, Travis Hamonic and Andrew MacDonald will be back from the team's regular 2011-12 defense

There are other defensemen available, according to two NHL sources, but they are veterans playing mediocre hockey on fairly unworkable contracts: the Flames' Jay Bouwmeester, the Canucks' Keith Ballard and possibly the Penguins' Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek.

So Snow likely will have to continue his search beyond the draft, hoping an arbitration case forces a team's hand, as it did with the Ducks and James Wisniewski two summers ago.

Wang wont spend on the team till he gets his project off the ground---if it wasn't for the YAshin deal they would have been under the contract the last few years

I can't see the Penguins moving Michalek.

Islanders Targeting Possible Defensemen via trade (Subban for 4th overall?)

Per Newsday (Subscription needed)

http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey...ason-1.3786615

He is targeting JayBo, Paul Martin, Keith Ballard, and Z. Michalek.

It was also rumored that he was willing to trade the 4th overall pick for PK Subban, but the new Habs GM is unwilling to trade him.

The Islanders are way under cap so they have to spend somehow

JayBo would be useful to the Islanders with Mark Streit flanking him. I don't know what acquiring Keith Ballard would accomplish though

Take Komisarek! He grew up an Isles fan and is from Long Island. Maybe a change of scenery is what he needs and going home could be good for him. He could likely be had for a conditional or late round pick.

I think Snow's trade demands will remain the same this draft,as they've been the past few drafts:he'll move his 1st and top youngsters, only in deals that make sense for both short term and long term and for players he can fit into his budget.

If there is any truth to the rumors that Kane wants out of Winnipeg,I would expect Snow to be in the mix, making an offer.Kane at $4m on Snow's roster and 4 yrs from unrestricted free agency, makes a lot more sense for Snow, then Nash at $7.8m(not that he'd waive his NTC).

Warning to all prospective UFA defenseman: If you don't sign with the Islanders, we will wait 2 years until the team you signed with doesn't want to pay your salary anymore, and then trade for you. You cannot avoid the Wang Circus, you may only delay the inevitable.

Paul Martin, this is your destiny.

As a Islander fan I would LOVE if we got Subban. It would give us the physical top four defense man that we had been lacking and I feel he is better than the value we'd get at number four anyway.

If Ballard and Martin were treated as strictly cap dumps then I think they would both be good pickups for the Isles.

Mark Streit - Keith Ballard/Paul Martin
Travis Hamonic - Andrew MacDonald
xxxxxxxxxx - Keith Ballard/Paul Martin

I don't know if Michalek or Martin listed NYI as a team on their NTC or not. They really have struggled mighty with bringing in quality D-men. That de Haan pick looks worse by the second.

boredmale,I think they will toss Parenteau's($4m) money, at a ufa(Kostitsyn/Huselius/Penner) and look to bring in a $4m-$4.5m defenseman. Those will be Snow's big offseason moves.

Snow's already indicated he's not veering off his youth movement.
He mentioned Cizikas,Ullstrom and Donovan as kids he expects to make the next step(up from the ahl).

Martin is not going to be treated as a cap dump. As bad as he was last season the entire defense was as well so you wouldn't expect all of them to be cap dumps.

There isn't a word in the english language to cover the breadth of "WTF-ness" I felt when I didn't hear Zack Kassian's name called on that 12th pick.

That being said, while he doesn't really impress me and never quite has, I'll reserve judgment on him a little longer, though part of me still feels he was picked for being Tavares' teammate and little else. Just one dude's opinion.

Yeah, Dumba to NYI makes a lot of sense (if Murray doesn't drop)

If the Canucks sign Garrison I could maybe see Ballard being available but it all depends on the cap because we could maybe afford having a d corps of:

Edler Garrison
Hamhuis Bieksa
Ballard Salo/Schultz/Tanev

Dehaan looks like he will be a top 4 defenseman within the next couple of years, I don't know how it looks worse by the second. Sure there were better players picked behind him, but nothing can be done about that now. I would be happy if we managed to get a top 4 defenseman every year if we were drafting #12.

Michalek or Martin would be great additions, but I can't see the Penguins trading them within the division, even if the Islanders are by far the worst team in the division.

And there it is. No, not a chance. Now please never post about Komisarek to the Islanders again.
