Now is a time of great decision
Are we to stay or up and quit?
There's no avoiding this conclusion
Our league is turning into ****

In the NHL? Never if they're actually under contract.

Man, I wish I could say **** you to this league and remove it from my life, but the reality is I just can't. Bettman is right. But, everyone has their breaking point...

To me its not so much the owners holding out. What's going on now is that the owners are *****ing that the players are paid too much. But why are they paid too much? Because the owners offered them that salary. If the owners think players are paid too much, then DON'T OFFER THE DAMN SALARY.

The owners are being hipocrites and this is why i'm leaning on the side of the players.

Alexei Yashin alone did it three times.

Under the current CBA, a holdout is impossible so it's a moot question.

I don't get why people are so shocked and appalled that the owners want a new CBA.

Yes, of course they signed the old CBA. Seven years ago. Times have changed. The economy has changed. Why the hell should they be expected to not change what they want out of the league accordingly?

Key indication that CBA negotiations will move forward,if in fact NHL does table a proposal,is if the offer addresses NHLPA position that they (players) may take less in the future, but not less than they already have.If NHL offer similar to first,we're counting the days. #TSN
Doesn't appear to be anything new, but here's hoping we can move forward, even just a little.

Also, side note: Ward has become a great analyst since retiring. He's been on top of this CBA thing since Day 1.

NHL proposed a 6 year term today. Players Share: 2012/13 - 51.6% 2013/14 - 50.5% 2014/15 - 49.6% 2015/16 - 50% 2016/17 - 50% 2017/18 - 50%

I'm told league proposal reduce financial "ask" tabled in first proposal by $460 million including, by $120 million in Year 1.
I'm no expert...but that seems fair, right?

The NHLPA needs to realize that 50/50 is fair and equitable. The NFL and NBA set the precedent and they need to fall in line.

I was disappointed by the league's initial proposal, but today's offering seems to be a solid foundation to build on.

Yeah, it sounds like a lot of people are more optimistic about the lockout chances now, but there were days like this one back in 04-05 as well.

So, could be good or could be a smokescreen.

I'm very happy to see that the owners made a reasonable offer. I think it's pretty close, but the little details may need some ironing out. What I do wonder about is the new cap. From what I've been able see, the proposed new cap is 58 million and there isn't a contract rollback. There are 16 teams over that now. The Canes would be right at the new cap. What is the proposal to deal with the teams over the cap.

I think 50/50 is fair and reasonable on the revenue front.

I'm gonna be optimistic that this can get done in time. And I like the fact they are going to meet again this afternoon instead of the NHLPA taking a week like before to respond.

Early indications suggested the players weren't enthused with the deal, with one source noting the league was still asking for a lot of concessions and "just trying to make it easy to swallow."

I don't expect them to be enthused with the deal. The only way they would be enthused is if the owners kept the current deal. A deal that can be accepted by the players is not neccessarily the same as one that will enthuse the players.

I think the players know that you're right, hence the "easy to swallow" comment.

The recent proposal hikes the escrow amount significantly, which is why the players aren't enthused. Same effect on their actual wallets as the original proposed salary rollback.

Exactly. The owners reworded their original proposal and tried to pass it off as compromise, but the end effect is the same.
